The Running Thread - 2020

June totals
92.3 miles
9’40” avg per mile

511 miles for the year so right on target for my 1000 mile goal!

Taking a week off for R n R and as I type this I am sitting poolside at the treehouse villas. Very strange to be in Disney with almost no one, no parks, but a true do nothing relaxing vacation

June Total: 215 miles. Very big deal for me.

Since the end of 2018, this is the second time I've crossed 200, the last one being last September. More importantly, this was done entirely pain free.

2019 was all about plantar fasciitis, and failed efforts to fix it. Third week in January, after a solid 2 months off, I started on the Mobo board, workouts from 'Running Rewired', plenty of Vitamin D, and a VERY slow buildup of easy running only. I'm now able to do some speed work and hills without any issues. I'm not yet to where I was at W&D in 2018 when I ran by best race by far, but I'm confident if I stay smart, I will be able to beat that run by this November. (But I can't recommend the Mobo board enough for anyone with a lower leg or foot issue.)

Happy Birthday @camaker! I enter a new age group next month and I don't think it's going to help me ;)

I am sure you will have a blast those guys know how to put on an event! I love the St. Patrick's day 10K those guys put on, favorite race of the year. I hope we can get a race report on the Good Life Halfsy, I am very interested on hearing how it goes.

Good luck with the training, the heat lately has been brutal (at least for me), I hope it goes well!
Thanks! And yes, they put on great races! You must be somewhat local to run the Leprechaun Chase yearly- awesome! I've done the Halfsy and a 10 miler and both were so well organized. I would love to do one of the M2M events one day too.

June Totals:

Running: 140 miles
Average Pace: 9:33

Another good month for me. Most miles YTD. Pace is a little slower, but with the rising T+D, I'm not surprised.

Hitting the Y for 2 strength workouts and 1 yoga class a week. Yeah yoga!

My weight is at a possible all-time adult life low.

Whoa! I feel good, I knew that I would, now
I feel good, I knew that I would, now
So good, so good...

June Totals
214.71 miles
7:25 avg/mile
111.28 miles biked

They opened up registration for the fall 10 mile race here in Pittsburgh in November. Even though I'm about 0.00001% confident that it'll happen, I registered for it. They said they'll offer full refunds or virtual option when/if they have to cancel.

June: 77.69 miles
-Avg Pace: 17.21
-T+D Avg: 136
2020: 234.42 miles

All in all, not bad for taking almost 12 weeks off. Distance is not quite where I want it to be, however I have spent the month establishing walking routes from the new house which will help in July. Pace is not where I want it to be; part of this is because of the time off and part because of the temperatures. I keep trying to convince myself this weather is good training for Florida. So far it isn't helping.

June totals:
Run - 94mi
Bike - 367mi
Swim - 20,000 yds.

I have been taking one week to focus more on running, then the next week more on cycling, then back to running, mixing in the swimming for recovery/cross training/sanity. Losing hope that my fall triathlon is going to happen, but honestly I enjoy the training more than the race anyhow so just keeping on keeping on!

June was a lesson in humility for me. I was doing too much running and increasing the load too quickly. Had an injury that sidelined the running for 3 full weeks. The positive is that it has forced me to cross train with other activities that I love to do. It will only lead to a being a better runner in the end.

June Totals
Running Distance: 178.57 miles
Running Time: 27:00:22
Average Pace: 9:04/mi
Average HR: 132/min
Walking Distance: 11.85 miles (probably about twice this, but forget my Garmin a lot)

I actually started a training plan for Chicago about 3 weeks ago. It seems a bit silly given there's almost no chance they'll host a marathon this year, but I needed to have a goal or else I'd just run and not really have any structure.

June miles = 140

Mileage was a little bit back to normal for me this month. I actually had things going on in June which cut back on a few long weekend runs. We were finally able to move my daughter out of her campus house earlier this month so I spent one weekend driving out to OH and back to get her stuff. And then I spent almost all of last weekend actually attending a live pro sports event in person as I was able to volunteer at the Travelers Championship PGA golf event in CT. It felt good to finally get out and do some normal stuff!!

As for races, since I am still dying to get a race in and not sold on the virtual races, I spent some time yesterday looking up every race site that was posted on Running in the USA - which is doing a great job staying updated, btw. I mainly was looking for any race that actually updated their site with post pandemic guidelines saying they were still on. In a sea of races that were either not updated, postponed, canceled or gone virtual I found one small solitary local 5K that claims they are going with "social distance guidelines" next Saturday. I am not even sure how they got approval in our state but it was only $20 so I signed up. It is chip timed and they are having runners cross the starting line one at a time. Should be interesting if it happens. Fingers crossed!!

May = 191
April = 164
March = 164
February = 101
January = 110

2020 total miles = 870

I will join you in the June humility club.

June Summary
35.5 miles
This is by far my lowest mileage since January when I took two weeks off. June brought me a feeling in my knee I didn’t like. So with all races cancelled I took a little break/eliminated long runs to try and recover. I think it’s better now, but I probably won’t push past 6 miles on long runs for the summer because I don’t handle heat and humidity too well. It’s just frustrating to want to run but know you shouldn’t.
We’ll see how July goes - I’m switching to kilometres on my watch for a Canada Day challenge, so that’ll be interesting at least.

June:

Total: 206.85 mi
Avg pace: 9:14
Elevation gain: 10,043 ft

Welp, after all these year I finally ate it during a run. Tripped over a crack in the road going downhill and this time couldn't catch myself, face planted, and skidded down the pavement. Somehow most of the damage was to my knee and elbow; even my husband was surprised how little I was cut up based on the state of my clothes. I even limped an additional 4mi to complete my run. But since then my knee still hurts even though it's been almost a month. As such, my runs have been steadily getting slower although I don't know how much of it is due to knee pain or getting burned out on all these hills. I've been too tired to do even my short faster runs at pace if that. But I've done a few jogs with DH and son, which made my knee happy.

June Totals
Running: 24.4 miles, and that included the Zion at Night half marathon. Running took a back seat this month to...

Hiking: at least 71 miles (there were a few short hikes that I forgot to turn on my Garmin for) across 4 National Parks.

I considered this month a mental health break, and the beauty on the hikes more than made up for the loss of running fitness. Hopefully, it won't be too hard to get back to my regularly scheduled runs in July.

June was another good month of running for me. Knock on wood, I seem to have been able to safely increase my routine base from 25-28 miles/week to around 35 miles/week this year. It feels great so far. I also finally pulled the trigger and registered for the Weymouth Woods 50k trail race on Sept 5th, although I started training for it earlier in the month. Here’s my monthly summary:

June Totals
Running Distance: 145.07 miles
Running Time: 25:16:10
Average Pace: 10:32/mi
Average HR: 150 bpm
Walking Distance: 58.69 miles

In addition, I usually only look at my 12 month running volume from January to December. I’m generally somewhere in the 1100-1250 miles/year range. On a whim, I looked back at my rolling calendar year from July to June. I’ve put in 1617 miles in that timeframe! I was very surprised at the number. Let’s hope I can keep it up!

June 2020

Running
-mileage 114.0 mi
-average pace 11:54
-total time 22.62 hr

This is down a bit from last month, but still a reasonable total for me.

Tennis
-10 hr !!!

So nice to be playing tennis outside. Even doubles has almost no contact. We just have to remember to not congregate at the change-overs.

Other positive news...I got a coronavirus test yesterday, and it came back negative. I got the test as a precaution because I want to drive out of state to visit my mother and family this weekend. The trip is a go! Haven't seen them in person since Christmas. They live in a very rural area of PA where their county has something like 8 confirmed cases of the virus.

June 2020
miles 40
average pace 12:26

I actually saw the mileage was 39.93, so of course I had to run down the block and back.

The month was up and then it was down. I was thrilled I got to escape to my favorite hilly trail where I found myself lost at twisty intersections as I seem to every time I go back in the spring. After some heat, humidity, and fantastic storms at the end of May, the first week and a half of June felt great with lower temps and humidity in the morning, combined with a reasonable quantity of sleep. While not paying any attention to paces, I found myself going faster than the previous month and accidentally 'speeding' up an overpass and round some hills repeatedly which took a toll. Knocking about a minute off my mile time and getting closer to my historical low felt pretty good- it was closer to where I thought I would be at this point in the year. It took me a few days to figure out this speedy hill work was probably a poor choice and the cause of a calf that hurt whether I was moving or not. I am looking forward to seeing if I can keep the speed on a flatter area and not have the same aches- but I am going to hold out for nice weather again.
The end of the month was a bit of calf rest, back to hot and humid and slow, and a return to in-person work without a decrease in work from home ate into my sleep, While I was not thrilled with the minor injury and it was fewer miles than I wanted I'm at peace with the pace for what it was. I do not anticipate July will be any better running weather, but I am hoping to find a better balance with work-work-home life so that I sleep AND do not try to use the force to choke co-workers through the computer screen. Even if July's running is a repeat of June's I will be grateful for the opportunity to get out of the house and move.
