News Round Up 2020

The same thing has been said about the Subs at DL for years too.

The Subs dont work in this environment. I dont think people are going to be comfortable to go on them for a LONG time, vaccine or not. The Subs are still relatively new, I think they opened in 2006? The Speedway at MK doesnt have the connection to Walt that Autopia does, so I dont think TLS is an attraction worthy of being the exception to the “Disney parks aren’t a museum” argument.

Well the actual sub theme ride itself has been at DL since 1959. Yeah it’s not the original iteration, nor the original vehicles, but keeping a sub ride there does tie into the connection to Walt, just with an IP added.

Yeah, Nemo (the clownfish), I can confidently say that Walt Disney didnt think of when the ride was designed. I think they could keep the land as is, but I cant see that ride being operational anytime in the near future, if ever again. Trapped in a submerged vehicle with other people breathing in the same air? While the virus might be gone or contained, people aren’t going to forget the circumstances and line up for that type of attraction.

Oh I agreed completely with your point. I wouldn’t want to get in one right now at all, or any time in the future. Definite COVID trap there.

They made me uncomfortable before Covid and I'm not hugely claustrophobic.

I completely agree! We were planning on booking at Pop, but for $195/night, we are back to considering options. I love Pop, but we're looking at paying more than we did two years ago during peak season, with a dining plan and an extra day in the park. That's hard to justify when they aren't meeting capacity.
Just curious as to when you were looking at booking that for Pop. It was about $150/night for next week when I booked a few days ago, I got it for $112/night with my AP discount. Huge part of the reason I decided to book a last minute trip, way less than what I paid last year and earlier this year. I know it definitely varies in price throughout the year though.

And the seats are so small. Still managed to snooze through a good portion of it in March. It helped that we were almost the last on sonalmoat the first off. I felt bad for the first people in line stuck on there so long.

The nautilus walk through at DLP is more interesting and lots of room but there also weren't many people on it when we walked through. I'm sure the DL subs help with crowds way more.

I dont think the Speedway is going to last much longer. I dont think it’ll be an announced closure at D23 2021, but I dont think TLS is still at MK in 2030. Just my opinion. It takes up almost half the real estate of Tomorrowland, they could fit a number of new attractions in that space

Probably an accurate take. I wouldn't be surprised if that happened. Lots of space in that whole land for some more attractions.

While I agree this attraction was outdated about 2 decades ago, if they didn't decide to announce a refurb/reimagine with Tron .. I don't see it happening for a LONG long time.

With the bad year that Disney is having (and probably will extend into next year) .. I don't think Disney will be in any rush to plow down an attraction and replace it to use the space better. If anything -- we'll see the opposite. It will be probably be seen as too costly to run/repair and it will just be abandoned and left to gather dust like Disney has a history of doing with many attractions.

While very valid, I’m not saying they’re going to change it this year, or next. I’m thinking more towards the end of the decade. While things look grim right now, they’re going to spend money again. And Tomorrowland on both coasts needs some work. I think the fact that they didnt update it at all other than the track placement is, at least to me, an indication that they don’t see it as something worth upgrading and just waiting until something comes along that works in that space.

it would be great if it could be reimagined to go around and over other attractions to reduce (ie stretch) the footprint but still maintain the experience. It could be that the outside of the buildings irt went behind and around could be decorated like the scenery from Cars....

not sure if Cars themes works just as they have it still as part of Tomorrowland .... I would prefer they just change out the cars to be electric and then make the theming look a bit futuristic/Tron-like - maybe relate it back to the idea of Tomorrowland being a intergalactic transporation hub

My husband thought he might not feel comfortable at his over 6ft 5inch height but he did fine and actually thought it was a cute attraction.

But in COVID-era even with strict low capacity being in a confined space much less small confined space won't seem like the best idea. I think people will go on it given the choice but will it be enough to warrant running the ride not sure much less will that be the best ride to run versus letting it sit closed for a while.

What outdoor, in plain view attraction has Disney had a history of leaving abandoned and gathering dust?

TLS for all it's faults manages to remain pretty popular. It may eat up a lot space, but it eats up a lot people in pretty short time period. With Tron opening up, a ride like that becomes even more important in more crowded Tomorrowland. Given those facts and the fact that updating it would be pretty cheap, I don't see it getting shutdown or replaced. One thing that could happen is they could make the track shorter like many regional parks have on their versions of TLS and have a TLS that eats even more people per hour while opening up space for something else.

Those aren't rides in parks, in plain site. No way they will let it sit where it is gathering dust. Not a chance.
20,000 Leagues wasn’t exactly in great condition post closure.

They’d likely do minor upkeep so it isn’t overrun, but they absolutely have a history of letting SBNO attractions sit for quite a while.

Peoplemover tracks are still up at DLR, Primevial Whirl now, the old gondola stations were left up for many years at MK...not quite the same but entire buildings at Epcot have been neglected for many years and even used in a state of neglect (the former festival center before they repainted and touched up inside).

We're looking at Oct. 24-31 and now it's showing up at $178 before taxes and fees. Glad you were able to get a nice deal with your AP!
