The Running Thread -- 2022

I’ve got DSG cold weather compression tights and they kept me warm through subzero MN runs last winter. I just ordered 2 more pair.

Hello! I’m thinking of perhaps running with a run-walk-run pace group for the first time in January (aspirationally, the 5-hour pace group), and I had a couple of questions. How do they integrate hydration stops in with the intervals (assuming they do)? Similarly, what about fueling? It takes me about 1 minute to finish an energy gel packet, and I‘m assuming I would need to get a little ahead in advance and/or catch back up afterwards, but is that how it would work? Thanks!

I know that with the 6:30 and 7:00 groups that the intervals are kept even through the aid stations. The 5hr pace group used 60/30 intervals last year (11:26 overall pace) and they started in S4. I would not count on them changing or pausing their intervals for aid stations.

Maybe consider breaking up your gel over the walk portion a few intervals instead of all at once?

Thanks for the info, and I guess that does make sense.

I definitely need water or Powerade with the gel, and so far for in-person events I've relied on the provided hydration. So I think I would just have to plan on catching back up with the group. It doesn't seem like I'd be that far behind....

Disney has announced AP discounts January 2-April 30, so if you can convince the website to actually show you the rates, you might find discounts for the 2023 race weekends
I can't get it to show me the rates. :( Just keeps making me login and then doesn't show me the rates!

Maybe try a different browser? I have the same issue sometimes when I try to log into the rD website in Safari, and it doesn't even load in Firefox, but it usually works with Chrome. And yes, that is completely ridiculous.

A few things came to my mind reading this comment:
  • It is usually recommended to take gels with water, not Powerade. I usually alternate what I drink, Powerade at one station, water (and gel if necessary) at the next.
  • Try practicing eating and drinking while running before the race if it is something you want to accomplish.
  • If you really prefer to stay with a group, there is always the possibility to carry your own water. This way, gels can be taken between stations.
Hope it helps!

Finally got it to work! Saved a couple bucks on my Springtime Surprise reservation. Nothing huge but everything helps!

Anyone know if you already have a reservation, do you have to call to try to change it to the AP rate?

Once I got it to work (Firefox did the trick), I was able to hit "Change" on the website and try and switch the rate. For most of the races (Marathon and Princess) there was no availability. But Springtime had some.

You’re a genius! That worked, and I upgraded from Pop to CSR for Springtime Surprise, and saved $32.46!
Please, please, please let us know if there is a general public discount… I already payed 100$ too much for each airplane tickets and over 200$ a night for AsMo feels like a punishment for wanting to come running at Disney.

Happy to see that some people are getting deals!

I've also seen some articles/research that where you are in your cycle impacts physical activity. I'll have to see if I can find it.
I bought the book "Roar" by Stacy Sims which deals with this and how to eat/exercise around your cycle. I did start it, but I realized since I am already doing a marathon training plan I didn't feel it was a good time to try all the changes. Has anyone followed it?
