Teen Female Suicide Way Up

What explains the jump (according to the statistics provided by the OP) from 2014 to 2019 - the percent change looks to be 35% - how is this COVID related?
Which backs my "it will only get worse" comment. These children needed a stable educational system right when we left them high and dry. Things are going to get worse.

Not following your logic.

The underlying problem has been growing significantly since 2014 when apparently there was a "stable educational system" in place until 2020. The problem wasn't getting better in that period - it was continuingly getting worse.

The incline during 2020-2022 is worsening from the data-set provided, which likely can be attributed to isolation and reintegration post COVID. But, I don't understand how this really "backs" anything because the growing underlying issue which progressively got worse pre-COVID is the primary concern. (EDIT) - and the additional data for females in their 20s and 30s also spiked in the same period of 2020-2022 - presumably - they are not all necessarily in school

And based on what you are predicting, by suggesting "it will only get worse", I hope seriously you are wrong because we are talking about teen females committing suicide.

The academic results of this are just starting to come in. That is also very ugly. People with means were able to find a lifeline and save their childrens’ educations. The ones without money for private school or tutors? Not so much. And it’s stunning.

Absolutely agree - perhaps more focus on the issues leading to and especially now with the intensification of the last several years - I am less concerned about being "right" and more concerned about the problem.
I understand that, and normally I would agree. But it is very important so that we don’t make the same mistake ever again. I hope that we do take a long hard look as a society at just what happened.

Meanwhile, this is a frightening situation, and I hope we find some answers. Unfortunately, I don’t even have a guess what the answer is.

I understand your point of view. There were/are currently many systemic failures in society/government/science contributing to a large variety of unsubstantiated results and anecdotal evidence being used for different reasons.

Probably better not to start on the conspiracy theories here folks. Lockdown did indeed hurt ppl, but disease hurts them too. Can we all just agree it was a no win situation no matter what happened and leave it at that?

I do want to comment on the too much screen time, while I do agree. Has anyone here ever question why parents allow it? If someone has to work 2 jobs to make ends meet, of course they cannot control everything their child watches or does. Not saying it's the situation for everyone, some parents are just neglectful, but lets not assume the worst of every parent.

I disagree with your characterization of the discussion of the impact of covid on this issue as a "conspiracy theory". That's too dismissive.

As I said, 2 things can be true. Screen time is a huge issue. But so was Covid and the ensuing lockdowns.

And the deaths cause by Covid are also true. But I don't want to get the thread locked down. SO, let's not be dismissive of the millions of ppl who died either and move on with the subject.

....before even clicking on to this thread, I was not surprised [didn't read the OP's link either] about the findings. I teach 6th grade Pre-Algebra and I see the 'drama' every day with the 6th grade girls [the boys too, for that matter] and it really saddens me. Young people have lost the art of face-to-face conversation and feel empowered behind a phone screen. Social media is such a double-edge sword.

I didn't dismiss anyone's death. Just your characterization of a a serious matter as a "conspiracy theory".

Doing some digging into why 2014 might be such a catalyst year I found this-

“Snapchat reported their highest year-over-year percentage user growth in 2014, with 104% growth”

Also, suicides has a steep increase after Robin Williams took his own life in 2014.

But if you have small numbers, it's "easier" to increase a higher percentage. If I have one of something and I can convert it to 10 of something, that's a 1000% increase!

That is true. However, this looks like when they were first really reaching out into the market after a somewhat rocky launch in 2011 and they went up pretty quickly in 2014 to 35 million active daily users in North America by the end of the 2014 fourth quarter and really found a foothold in social media.
