I love credit cards so much! v6.0 - 2023 (see first page for add'l details)

I am about to make a weird use of some of my UR's. I think Im going to cash out a few thousand to pay for a used pop up trailer we are buying (to hold us over until we buy a diesel puhser in a few years). Once this MSR is met, I will have over 1.7 million UR"s so I figure I can spare some. I know it's only 1% but, I think it works for us.

I have used points in a very non ideal manner before. Whatever works for you.

If anyone is thinking about going to Vietnam next year, there are 4 J tickets via AF for 55K + 366 on 5/13. They have other days but that's the only one that has 4 J seats. I'm going to keep looking, but if I can find them in early June I think that's where we will head next year.

I cash points all the time, we have more points than vacation days so I would rather earn 1CPP then let them sit there and devalue.

The first rule of this hobby is there’s no wrong way. Congrats on the awesome stash and the upcoming purchase! More than once I’ve thought about cashing out to buy more DVC. Haven’t done it, but it doesn’t mean I wouldn’t.

So well said and a big DITTO from me. A cash back card does nothing for me--I get so much more value out of using MRs/URs for airline seats. We mostly focus on First/Business airline seats since we travel so much, but I'm also a big Hilton Aspire fan (DD and I both have the card) and we love using our FN rewards for golf places in PHX to go visit DD and Hilton points for stays at the London Paddington when leaving London. I'd have to look back on the exact numbers, but my best redemption by far was 4 people RT from SFO/LAX to Japan in 2019 on ANA and JAL--6 legs in first and 2 in business. The cost for the tickets would have been over $58,000 if I'd used cash. Instead, I paid in miles (via BA and VS) and maybe $800-1200(?) in cash for all four of us. We still talk about that trip. First class on ANA and JAL was an experience in itself. My (special needs) son and husband were the only 2 passengers in First on the way back on ANA and they had 3 flight attendants to themselves. My son kept saying "This is awesome, Dad" over and over. ROFL. Priceless!

That’s a sweet redemption value! Bravo!

Like so many others, I'm jumping on the Japan bandwagon. It's the only place my family of 5 (DH, DD15, DS14, DS11) is in agreement on wanting to go to. So where do I start? I know NOTHING about Japan. We are most likely not going to do Disney while there. I'd love to do June 2024, otherwise April or June 2025. I have a pretty healthy stash of points in URs and MRs, some Hilton and Marriott. With 5 people I'm also assuming we'll have to fly economy. Are there books, websites, trip reports, vloggers that people would suggest reading/following to start figuring it all out? Any and all advice very welcome. Thanks so much!!!

There are a lot of people on this thread who have been lately (I was there twice in the 90s when my parents lived there for it seemed like forever lol). The only caveat I have is if you or your travel party is on medications (especially stimulants but also others) you cannot take it in country...which is why I always told DD it wasn't on the list of countries we'd visit for graduation. Just a head's up if that applies to anyone-that can be a rude awakening if you put too much time/energy into going and realize those restrictions will affect you. If not, enjoy planning!

You do you…that’s an amazing amount of points…. I use URs to PYB loved the restaurant category, now use it for food stores..actual groceries and Disney GCs. We fly SW so get the CP and use RR points to visit our son and his family who live in Orlando.
We just can’t do the amazing international or first class flights redemptions…

Getting ready to close an Ink or two ahead of applying for another one.
Does it matter how many I close at once? Could I even close 2 or 3, or would it be better not to?
I'm also debating whether or not to move my credit limit(s) over, because Chase currently extends me in total about 62% of my (not counting my spouse) income.

I have the same question, actually. I was wondering if closing one just before applying to the next affects the application in any way. I plan to get a second CIC in July and would like to close my sole CIU since that's now 13 months old.

Re: spouse's income, why not include it?

I have a question about credit limits on chase. Can the available $ credit limits be moved from one card to another?

If so, how do I do this?

Thanks!:)

Re: spouse's income, why not include it?

I closed a CIC in March and then was approved for another one 31 days later in April so I don't think there should be any problem.

I also always include spouse income on my applications. No way I would have been able to get the number of cards I have without it.

Easiest way to do it is thru the Secure Message from your account online. Just ask them to move $X,XXX of credit limit from card ending XXXX to card ending XXXX.

They usually process it in 24 - 48 hours.

This blanket statement may well be true for you and your preferred method of using credit card rewards. However, for many/most of us on this thread, it couldn’t be further from the truth of what works for us. Those of us who have been on this thread for a long time know that there is no wrong way to participate in this hobby. What works for one person and their goals simply may not work for another. I will use myself as an example, comparing what works for you and why it won’t work for me, to illustrate the point for those who may be newer to this hobby.

If I spend $10,000 in Amazon purchases over one year with the 5x Amazon card, I’d earn 50k points worth $500. If I spent $50,000 in one year with a 2x card I would have earned 100,000 points worth $1,000. So I have $1500. Sounds great right? Maybe for someone with different travel goals this is perfect. Not. For. Me. I play this game mostly to experience a higher end more luxurious style vacation and pay as little out of pocket for the experience. My best was 2019 with a $57,000 vacation flying first class on Emirates to the Al Maha Desert Resort and Spa in Dubai and ending in Overwater bungalows at the Conrad Rangali in the Maldives. Booking that was all points and miles and about $235 or so out of pocket. I would not have used $1500 in cash back points and $55,500 in cash to experience that. Haven’t topped that one yet. So maybe it’s an outlier.

Let’s go with the one I am on right now. Business class flights using American Airline miles and Air France miles which would have cost a little over $12,000 to get from Miami to Tahiti. Three nights in Hilton accommodations Moorea that would have been about $2,700 and 3 nights in Bora Bora that would have been about $6,500 and one night in Tahiti that would have been about $400 all booked with Hilton points. Food and transfers are going to run me about $1,000 or more which could be covered by that cash back from an Amazon card and a 2x card but is likely to be hit with foreign transaction fees on top. Fortunately, I can also wipe those out with Hilton Aspire cards and the benefits they come with as well as the points for these stays are something I can make full use of each year. Nonetheless, I would not have paid over $20k to take this trip and cash back cards at 2x or 5x would do me no good.

This is why I, and many others here use sign up bonuses from cards, be they airline, hotel or variable points cards throughout the year to amass points and miles. Many of us also maximize the spending categories of said cards, use shopping portals and purchase no fee gift cards to build up the points stash. For most of us, a cash back card or two alone will not suffice for our travel goals.

I do at least one fully travel hacked trip a year using all points and miles, sometimes more and mitigate the out of pocket costs of my other trips with this hobby. I hope this helps shed some light on why blanket statements don’t apply to all who “love their credit cards” and this hobby.

Cheers! All the way from Bora Bora 😉

Without this board and the (very) helpful posters I would never be able to travel the way that I do.

Just a few examples:
  • first class flight to Male via Dubai on Emirates (including first class connect where I get a hotel for my 13 hour layover with 3 meals and round-trip chauffeur transfer) would cost $10,800.00
  • ANA first class to Bangkok via Tokyo would cost $5,877.00
  • ANA first class home $14,163.00
  • In round numbers, my stay at the RC Maldives last fall would have cost me over $10,000.00 cash (paid in points, 5th night free)
  • 5 nights at the iconic Al Maha, approx. $6,603.00 (including 3 excellent meals and 2 desert activities per day) -- paid with points
I could go on, but the above are some examples to highlight the value of collecting and strategically using points and miles. To each their own, but most on this board are using collecting SUBs and sock-drawing cards once MSR is reached.

Speaking of cards, I think I'm going to go for the Surpass, using dd's Surpass to refer myself. I'm thinking that I'll use the points to visit the Conrad Maldives and probably use the FNC for a night at the Conrad St. James next year for an Arsenal game. For a $2,000.00 SUB it's a no brainer for me!

Did you purposely wait 31 days before applying?

I just couldn't remember if, when talking about the overall percentage of your income that you should stay below with Chase, whether that number included spouse's income or not.
I do household income for all credit apps. Until this year my spouse has made almost twice as much as me so it really helps lol

ETA: just called to cancel and had the CL transferred to the CIC.

With 3 aging rescue dogs (I worry about them) and 2 elderly widowed mothers (DH worries about them), DH and I have agreed to curtail our travels for the next few year, unfortunately so not a lot of exciting plans.
I'm with you on this. I have been slow to make plans for next year. DS is starting HS and who knows how that will go, plus I'm starting a new job next month and have no idea how time off will work. But the cap on it is what you mentioned. My mom is 80 with health issues, FIL is 83. In addition we have 2 dogs who need watching. We adopted an almost 8 yr old rescue last year, who had been abused in the past (owner's boyfriend locked him in crate and poked and teased him.) We have boarded him at a local animal hospital and he did fine at first. Then spring break this year, he was there for 8 days and lost nearly 10 lbs. They didn't say anything so I don't know if he refused to eat or they didn't feed him, but not taking him back. Last weekend we went to NOLA for 5 days and 4 days in, the new vet we boarded at calls to say he nipped a tech. He didn't bite hard but did break skin when she reached into his cage to get an empty food bowl. I have a feeling that it was a combo of stress and the above abuse when she tried to quickly reach in he found it threatening. He has never bitten before but obviously leaving him there is not ideal. DS has a soccer tournament in a couple weeks, so DH will stay home with the dogs while I take DS.
Bummer. Makes me feel a bit better about being old school and keeping my churning records on paper. DD laughs at me because I still keep a paper checking account ledger also. Plus I have a small notebook where I record all my monthly obligations. Makes it easier for me to plan when I have to move money around. Yeah, I’m old!
I have a spreadsheet on iPad but a paper calendar with each credit card listed on the day it is due, along with pay days. It's easier for me visually than a spread sheet, especially as I pay all the bills including DHs cc's. Following due dates for 15-20 cards is too hard for me otherwise.

I am so jealous of that number of URs! I tend to spend as I accumulate and I absolutely do PYB. To me, free is free.

Anyone have any tips or tricks for booking activities on the Chase travel portal? Trying to do San Diego zoo tickets using CSR points for the 50% bonus. When I add to cart, it just says it failed and to try again. I tried calling but the phone agent had the same problem and told me that the activity may be sold out.

Except, it's not a specific tour, it's just zoo and safari tickets. There's no way they are sold out for some random August day. Other than checking back every few days to see if the error resolves, I'm not sure what else to do.

That's interesting. Is there a list of problem medications anywhere you can easily point me to? I don't have anyone on stimulants but one of my DDs travels with a veritable pharmacy! Lol. Nothing on any schedule in the US.
