1st Cruise, 1st TR: A Tale of a Little Sea Sickness (Or A Lot) - Fantasy Jan '15 [COMPLETED July 11]

I used the patch once. I get motion sickness on some attractions at WDW so I tried it and had the same reaction. I use meclazine with good results.
I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who can't use the patch. Sucks though. We're from Canada so the most common anti-nausea medication we have is Gravol, which the main ingredient is dimenhydrinate. It works really well for me, but also sometimes makes me drowsy.

Following along! I'll be on the Fantasy (first timer) in October, and I can't get enough ship pictures!

I used the seasick patch on a cruise a few years ago and it was HORRIBLE! I was basically a zombie, and I developed a stutter. My sister's vision was blurry for 2 weeks after we got back. Never. Again. I stick to Dramamine now!

And is that an upsidedown loop in the waterslide at the Edmonton Mall?? :scared1:

It's nice to read a trip report from someone so close to home! We lived in Grande Prairie for 35 years and just recently moved down just south of Calgary. We're heading out for DCL cruise #7 on Saturday! (On the Fantasy)

Following along as well! BTW I think Edmonton is a great city. My DD went to U of A for two years. Nice airport too.

Hi! Thanks for following along!!
Yeah I'm the same, just sticking with something plain and simple for motion sickness haha.

The upside-down loop slide is called the Aqua-Loop and it's a waterslide that kind of goes upside down haha!! It's not a true upside down, but more like you shoot down, fall down the tube, and the tube goes up a hill and you go back down on the other side haha. I don't know if you can imagine that? It's quite thrilling!!!

Which ship has been your favourite so far?? I see in your signature that you've been on the Wonder as well as the Fantasy! Is the experience any different on the smaller ship? Hope your next cruise will be great with good weather! Are you doing a few days at WDW before hand? We're going on Wednesday!

To all that have joined in on my journey into the world of Trip Reporting: Thanks for your patience! Timing wise for posting has been just a tad bad, as I've been super busy this last little bit. We're also doing a trip down to WDW in three days for a week, so I might not be able to post while we're on our vacation! But I'm trying my best! Again thanks =)

1st Cruise, 1st Trip Report: A Tale of a Little Bit of Sea Sickness (Or A Lot): Cruise Day 4: St. Maarten!!!!

CRUISE DAY 4: ST MAARTEN!!!! (With dinner at Palo and Pirate Night!)

My excitement for this day was solely based on the fact that I absolutely love watching airplanes, and I had only recently in the past few years heard about Maho beach (aka airport beach) and had added visiting this beach onto my bucket list. SO we didn’t have any excursions booked, and decided we were just going to wing it all day.

CegUDAO.jpg

Ahh, land! We walked around a bit and looked at the many shopping stalls. Then we followed all the people out of the terminal and we just wandered inland a bit more.
We quickly reached this empty beach, and in all honesty we were really excited to go and play in the ocean. So we parked ourselves down to sunbathe a bit and Theo and I took a dip in the ocean.

e6GSbcv.jpg

You can’t tell but our heads are poking out.
You can also still see the cruise ship terminal in the background.

At some point, we decided to explore the coast along the beach we were on, slowly making our way to Maho beach. (At the terminal we saw some water taxi services that offered rides to Maho, but we didn’t think we needed to take those.) Eventually we got to a weird wall of shrubbery and rocks, and we climbed around it. Suddenly there was a security guard on us telling us we weren’t allowed in. Turns out we walked onto the private beach of the hotel that was on the beach. While we were getting escorted onto the road away from the beach, we asked the security guard in which direction we would have to walk to get to Maho beach. He laughed at us and told us that it was on the other side of the island and it would be best to hail a cab.

WELL that was a lesson for us to do our research before just “winging it” haha. Luckily since we ended up wandering to a hotel, there were plenty of cabs available. The cab ride took a good 20 minutes, that went over a mountain to the other side of the island. It was a pretty cool ride, we got to see the amazing scenery.

A photo from the window in the cab.

As the taxi was pulling in to the beach, it was quite neat. You could tell we were nearing because the airport runway was fenced off to our left side, and we kept driving closer and closer to the coast. When we finally arrived, it was clear that this beach is a very popular destination. The beach was LOADED with people, and there were wanderers everywhere. We decided to take some seats at the restaurant bar on the beach just to gather ourselves while we ate some lunch.

AkRCcu4.jpg

JXlPQtk.jpg

The food on the menu was the usual beach food: hot dogs and pizzas, and burgers, and some bigger meals including ribs and the like. We mostly just had hotdogs and burgers. The bar was quite informative too, because they have a chalk board with a list of all the different flights coming in and going out. We watched the remainder of the morning flights out of the island take off while we ate our food. So, after lunch we made our way down the steps to the beach and planted down on a spot closer to the water, as everyone else seemed to be higher up closer to the road.

Maho beach is a smaller beach, with the actual beach sand area being rather narrow. The beach itself is fenced off from the road, and from there slopes down towards the water.
As with most public tourist attraction beaches, umbrellas and lounging chairs were available for rent. We were cheap so we sat on our towels.

ypYWaF9.jpg

Look at how crowded the beach was!

And then…. finally… our first excitement was coming. We were waiting patiently and watching the sky for an incoming plane. AND HERE IT COMES!!!!

In this photo you can see the giant wave coming in, and some people already getting knocked around.

6ipdN5T.jpg

Here it comes!!!

HZC7YIP.jpg

So much excitement.

After these photos, another big wave came. And this was when we discovered why most people were sitting as high up on the beach as possible. The water runs up VERY HIGH onto the beach. We screamed and scrambled to grab all our stuff before it could get washed away!!! Two of our four towels for completely drenched hahaha. We spent a lot of our time on the beach watching the planes come in (most of the planes were smaller, private charters. Only a few actual large commercial planes fly here. Nonetheless it was an amazing experience. On the beach we also watched and laughed at the people getting wiped out by the huge waves and getting swept down by the intense undertow.

We all spent some time swimming as well, and in all honesty the waves weren’t too bad when you’re actually in the water.

Here is a photo from my GoPro while I was in the water with a JetBlue flying in.

kE7h8Vo.jpg

Here is an American Airlines coming in.

And finally. The jewel of the day was flying in. The big one that everyone has come to see: The KLM double decker! We already knew from the chalk board roughly what time it was to be flying in, so we waited impatiently for it to come and here it was!

TTCeHqY.jpg

It’s here!!!

gQ3G1yA.jpg

It’s so large that you can’t even fit the entire plane into the photo haha

GbQQgot.jpg

(In the full size photo you can even see faces in the windows.)
Everyone is on their feet with their cameras and phones and even tablets in the air!

After the excitement of the KLM coming in, Theo and I decided to go and swim around in the ocean some more while Glendon and Sam sunbathed on the beach. A couple of smaller planes came in. There seemed to be a plane coming at pretty decent intervals. We didn’t have to wait all that long to see another one come in.

ncG1Ppa.jpg

We tried to get an “airplane hat” photo but Glendon being quite a bit taller than me…. this was the best that we got hahaha.

When we decided to finally make our way back to the terminal (we were worried about being back late so we decided to head back a touch early) we just went to the area with the abundance of transport back to the cruise ship terminal. We hopped into a van with a few other people, and headed back. Driving past the runway again, we saw a TON of people lining up against the fence staring at the KLM…. we totally forgot that the KLM does a departure as well and that this was another moment people wait for. Dang! We got to watch it take off the runway as we drove past though…

When we got back on deck, I liked the look of the sunsetting behind this Norwegian ship heh heh.

The ship on our other side

After getting onto the ship, we relaxed a little bit before getting ready for our dinner at Palo!!! We had chosen this night because since it was Pirate night scheduled, that meant it would have been pirate themed dinner at the regular dining restaurants. Glendon had been on previous cruises and wasn’t really into the pirate dinner, so he chose this night for our formal dinner at Palo!

Unfortunately, when all the food came out, we were all so hungry and so excited to eat everything (I think we did a sampling of all the appetizers we wanted to try… so about 4 of the appetizers I think…) that I forgot to take photos. But everything was so delicious!!! Theo, who’s a bit of a picky eater, loved his food. Sam, the chef, was so happy with his entree!!! Glendon had his usual favourite, the tenderloin. I wish that I had a copy of the menu so I could list off all the items we had ordered,

Here are the TWO photos I took this night.

Sorry I didn’t get any other photos, I was not prepared. After dinner we went back to get into our pirate gear… which is to say we changed out of my formal attire and into comfy clothes, and threw on the complimentary bandana and then headed onto deck. We watched the Pirate show on deck (which I thought was loads of fun and I wish I got myself a video of it….) and then enjoyed the fireworks!!! We didn’t really take part in the dance party afterwards though, just walked around a bit more and checked out the buffet at Cabana’s to see how many people would be snagging turkey legs for the night.

We finished up the night with watching the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie on Funnel Vision until it was over and then went to bed.

(Lesson learned for future reports… Always keep a camera on myself for everything and if I like something, take a photo and video.)

I'm always torn when saying which is my favorite! The Wonder is so beautiful and the crew is always amazing. But on the Fantasy there is far more to do, and my kids are now teens so there is a lot more for their age on the Fantasy as well. Honestly, any DCL ship, any time is okay by me!
This trip we are heading to the Magic Kingdom for a day after the cruise.(not my favorite order of business but oh well) We have a few other things planned before we head home as well. My oldest daughter is in high school so we had to plan this trip around her school break.
Have fun on your trip. Are you cruising this time as well?

Looks like you had a fantastic day! I've always wanted to visit there…it's on my bucket list!!! So to get to the beach with the airplanes, you have to call a cab or book an excursion? How close were they?! It looks like you could reach out and touch them!

When Jessica and I went, we just walked to a cab stand and said we wanted to go Maho Beach... Was around $20 USD each way so split between 4 of us, it wasn't too bad.

Sorry I forgot to do a reply before I left on my trip! That's good to hear that all the ships are good too. You can't really beat Disney service usually haha!
No, we didn't get to go on a cruise this time just did the parks for a week. We will be going on the Fantasy again in April, with 2 days at the parks before setting sail (Magic Kingdom for a day, and Epcot for the other day for Flower and Garden!)

Yeah, like Glendon said the cabs were relatively cheap. I think there are also some taxi cabs you can take too but don't quote me on that, I'm not entirely sure.
But if you've been wanting to go I definitely say it's worth it to visit St Maarten when you can! The island itself is so beautiful. When the planes were coming in, they were close enough that you can see faces in the windows. Still high up that it's safe on the beach, but the runway literally starts across the street from the beach so you're right in the action =)

Sorry I haven't had a chance to post in such a long time, we went away to WDW from the 10-17 and by the end of everyday I was to exhausted to even think about logging on. But I will have the next one ready to go shortly!

1st Cruise, 1st Trip Report: A Tale of a Little Bit of Sea Sickness (Or A Lot): Cruise Day 5: San Juan!

CRUISE DAY 5: San Juan, Puerto Rico!

In all honesty, I woke up this morning feeling very sluggish with my stomach rumbling from eating a very heavy dinner the night before. Luckily, again, we had absolutely no excursions planned for this day so we weren’t in a huge rush to get off the ship. Glendon decided he would stay with me in our room until I was ready to go, so Theo and Sam left earlier off the ship. None of us had any plans for the day.

When we finally got off the ship, the terminal was super crowded. It was a VERY HOT DAY, and it was another busy day for cruise ships, with 4 cruise lines in. We wandered for a little bit, and I went to pick up some digestive helpers at the CVS (I was very excited to see an American chain and it was fun seeing all the cast members lining up to pay for their huge amounts of snacks.)

Failed photo. Too sunny out haha.

We found ourselves at a Starbucks, and we just had coffees while we leeched free wifi and updated our families about how we were doing. We also used this time to see what there was to do. Since we weren’t really in the mood for much really, and with us communicating with our families again, what we really wanted to do was just some old school comfort stuff. Like shopping. SO again still on free wifi, found that there was an american mall called Plaza Las Americas! So we walked around the Old San Juan area a bit to take in the bit of culture, then hailed a cab and he took us for a good half hour journey through San Juan into the newer, more Americanized parts.

A huge reason that Glendon really wanted to come to this mall, though, was because he discovered they have a PF Chang’s… one of his favourite American chains (he LOVES Americanized Chinese food… and he LOVES American chains that we don’t have in our city). SO we made a lunch stop!

MyLfBPc.jpg

Interior of PF Chang’s haha.

Lettuce Wraps

After lunch we went to the mall and tried to find some good deals. We basically hit up all the stores we don’t have up in Canada: some random ones we’d never heard of before (I’m going to assume these were local stores) and our go-to American stores that haven’t made their way up to Canada yet. We did pretty good for shopping! Hit up Lady Footlocker and picked myself up a pair of Nike’s I’d never seen before, and Glendon got some t-shirts at Hot Topic and some shoes at PacSun. PacSun had a super sweet deal, where you buy any sale item and get 2 other sale items for free… So we grabbed some goodies for Sam and Theo so everyone got a piece of shopping haha.

Obligatory tourist mall photo

qlM5dZt.jpg

Obligatory sit in front of fountain at the mall photo. (I’m obsessed with sea turtles so I got very excited to see this robot fountain turtle.)

Sad story: I went to go use the washroom and when I went to go flush the toilet, my sunglasses that I had sitting on top of my head fell off my head and into the toilet. Noooooo my favourite pair of sunglasses!!! Luckily they weren’t that expensive to begin with, so I ended up picking up a pair of cheap ones to tie me over for the remainder of our trip.
After shopping we decided to catch a cab and head back to the terminal and just spend our remaining time on the ship. The cab ride was quite cool just because you can see exactly where it turns from the newer parts back to the areas they call Old San Juan.

When we met up with Sam and Theo and asked about their day, turns out they spent their time exploring the ruins (I completely forgot there were ruins here!!! This was one the things that I had read was fairly easy to get to from the cruise ship terminal. I was quite disappointed that I forgot.) and then spent the rest of their time walking around some abandoned buildings where they did mock photo-shoots, and then spent their time at Señor Frogs. Sam had a Skype interview he had to attend, so he couldn’t do too much this day. They were super excited to receive their shopping gifts though!

mT5DQPP.jpg

I really liked the water view from our stateroom port hole. (Featuring, my new cheap plastic sunglasses…)

While the boys caught up with each other I decided I wanted to spend my time up on deck. It was actually super great because my favourite princess movie was just starting on Tunnel Vision: Cinderella!!!

6oh3DDy.jpg

Really couldn’t have imagined a better “time for myself” moment than this!

QZuVtKt.jpg

True happiness selfie.

After the movie finished I decided to walk around and watch the ship pull away from the terminal. It was really cute because our neighbouring docked ships had quite a few people on their decks, and everyone was friendly so if you made eye contact with anyone, they would usually exchange a wave with you. Then when our ship played the horns you could actually hear the “WOW”s and “DID YOU HEAR THAT”s from the people in the other ships. Moment of pride to be on the Disney cruise! I hope I’m not the only one who had this go through my head… “ha! you all with you were on THIS ship don’t you!” oops!

On our way to dinner we walked past this porthole inside, and a little girl was talking to her dad and she said “Do you see the castle? Mom showed me the castle earlier it’s so cool!!!” I was sad, I don’t see a castle.

sQQ0u4Q.jpg

Mmmmmmm my appetizer at Enchanted Garden!! I really enjoyed this one!

After dinner, we decided to go and watch Into The Woods in the Buena Vista Theater since we all had been wanting to watch it. I really enjoyed it, but I don’t think Theo or Sam were expecting it to be a full on musical for the entire movie so I don’t think they enjoyed as much. I don’t think it helped that the entire night from this movie on I kept bellowing at the top of my lungs “INTO THE WOODS TO GRANDMOTHER’S HOUSE!!!!!”

The staircases by our stateroom leads up right to the Quiet Cove pool in the adult only section, and since I got banished from the room because I kept on singing, I decided to go back up onto deck to take a few photos while I hoped for the song to disappear from my head.

Fun update! I love San Juan, such a cool place. I was there twice, last in Nov 2013 on a NCL cruise. We took a tour for $10 from a group of tour drivers that were waiting at the entrance to the terminal when we got off. They were from a tour company and others were going so we jumped in, it was a nice tour, about an hour. that was enough for us. Our ship didn't get in to that port until 3:30 in the afternoon and we didn't get off until closer to 5 so it was dark when we got back but the area is pretty safe at night, well lit. We had to make a CVS run too! LOL

Wow! What was the tour about? That sounds like a pretty good deal haha.
How was NCL? I've had friends cruise with them on repeat but I've never personally so I've always wondered how they compare with DCL.

The tour was just a basic city tour, we drove around to see the town hall/government buildings, other sites, then we went to a small beach for pictures (it was really rough) and there was a little gift shop there and then to one of the Forts. It was a nice tour.

NCL was OK. I would go again if the price and itinerary were right. I haven't been on DCL yet (really want to one day) but I imagine DCL is MUCH better. But I have been on Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Princess, and Carnival. I think NCL might compare more to Carnival. While we were on it there were a lot of things that I wasn't crazy about. The service was adequate, nothing special, nobody went out of their way for you like I know they do on DCL and like I have experienced on Celebrity, Princess and Royal, even Carnival we have had great Dining room service. It might have a lot to do with the "Freestyle". You don't get the same waiter every night so they don't get to know you. I found out later that our cruise was 75% totally NEW crew, like this was their first cruise. (they poached all the good seasoned crew for the newest ship that was debuting around that time (I think it was the Breakaway)

Looking forward to more updates!

Fun trip report! So sad you got sea sick at the beginning but hopefully you'll continue to feel better throughout the rest of your cruise! Amazing pics - esp of the airplanes coming in - wow!
