Anti LGBTQ ports of call for Disney Cruise

We booked the Disney Fantasy for July, 2024 with our 3 children, one of whom is LGBTQ. One of the ports of call is Falmouth, Jamaica, which I heard is extremely anti LGBTQ. Has anyone had any experience there being LGBTQ or with someone in your party being LGBTQ? Any tips or advice on how to keep my child safe that day? We're also stopping at Cozumel, Mexico, and George Town, Grand Cayman. How safe will those places be? Thanks.

My husband and I traveled to Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel a few years ago and didn't have any problems. We were with tours and pretty much stayed with our group and engaged in "tourist-y" activities especially when we traveled to other countries that are not gay-friendly. We are always cognizant of our surroundings and acutely aware that others may not have our best interests in mind when we are out and about, so it's not a bad idea to have your guard up (but don't let it overcome your time vacationing). Having said that, we have not experienced any problems and we've traveled extensively over the years. I wish you all the best on your upcoming vacation. Travel safely!

Thanks for sharing. Kiddo will be 20 when we sail, sp ultimately the decision whether or not we get off the ship that day will be up to them. It seems if we stay with ship excursions (not that I'd go off on my own there no matter what) it should be safer. We live in an extremely accepting state so this will be our first time going somewhere that isn't.

I’ve heard a lot of bad things about Jamaica recently. Tourists being targeted. Not necessarily for being part of a specific group but just for being tourists.

Do you follow Ben & David on YouTube?
They both are very positive and try to find the silver lining in every situation but they just did a new video on how they won’t get off the ship in Jamaica because they were aggressively offered drugs several times the last time they got off and they just didn’t feel safe.

They also mentioned that if you were to get off the ship, they don’t recommend that you wear anything political like rainbow crocs. They are a gay couple so it wasn’t meant as a flippant remark.
Here is the video if you are interested.

I got offered weed on a cruise shore excursion in Port Antonio Jamaica while rafting down the Rio Grande.

The captain of our little bamboo vessel assured us that weed was legal on the river, but we declined. My brain kept screaming "entrapment".

I was going to link the same video. Ben and David are a good source for the good and bad of cruise ships and ports.

I try very hard to not go to places where being me and doing adult things with other adults in private will land me in jail. Jamaica was briefly on the list of honeymoon locations for my wife and I until I looked into it a bit more. Grand Cayman is near the top of the list of places I want to visit in the Caribbean now.

Falmouth Jamaica is definitely one you'll want to be careful for. (I'm not saying this is all Jamaican people, nor the country as a whole). But as Cast with several members of the LGBTQ+ community we have personally experienced different different levels of things on a regular basis and here's some tips

-Nothing bad really happens while you're staying within the Port area itself or going on an excursion (mostly). But once you decide to step out of the gates and walk out on your own is where it can get dicey
-Effeminate men might get called out as "battyboy" or sissy behind their backs, or intimidated when they walk past. (Same goes for disgusting comments for women and you hear racist slurs like "Chineyman or Mrs. Ching" for Asian families)
-Had one of my good friends have a really awkward moment on a tour we were escorting when he kept being teased about his clothing and how "that's not what women want"
-Cozumel and Grand Cayman are ok, sometimes heard some unpleasant pejorative terms for queer people when we sailed out of Puerto Rico,

Yeah. I have a cruise coming up going to that port. It's gotten to the point I'm not even comfortable taking an excursion outside the gates (especially after Ben & David's video).

Thanks for sharing the video. I never heard of them, so it helps to hear what they have to say.
