Any Advice About Maximizing Air Conditioner Efficiency?

I haven't read the responses but my neighbor is a HVAC guy. He installed programmable thermostats in our home (one downstairs, one upstairs) and we do have it set to change the temp during the day vs at night.

Since we live in Florida, some of our neighbors have installed tinted windows in their home. Others may try to tint them themselves. On one side of our home that gets a lot of sun and are two of the kids bedrooms we have roman shades (curtains) with a blackout liner. This serves a couple purposes. One, it provides privacy as from the outside you can not even tell if there is a light on in the room and these windows are the two on the front of the home. Two, the kids keep them shut pretty much all the time unless there is a reason they want to look outside (daughter waiting for a friend, etc.) so it keeps the sun from overheating their rooms. Before the roman shades their rooms were the hottest rooms in the house from the direct sun.

True enough, but their lives were a bit different. For one thing, they were used to it. You have to gradually acclimate to heat in order to deal with it without health consequences: jump in too quick and it flattened travellers just as badly then as it does now.

Yes the snowflakes couldn't take as they would melt... :) It is pushing 100 degrees here this week and only about 15% of the homes have A/C. People here are afraid if they install A/C the neighbors would notice and shun them for increasing their carbon footprint. Better to get overheated and look good then be cool and comfortable.

Only one response to that ... :rotfl2:

It is pretty funny. Have you ever watched Portlandia? The show was meant to be a spoof but it is pretty accurate depiction of people in Seattle and Portland. The latest goofy thing was the Carbon Offset Home Energy Tour. The environmentalists organized a tour of houses where people installed energy efficient HVAC systems. My neighbor had a constant stream of people ooh and ahhing over his heat pump. A very odd scene.

Have you had your AC unit serviced? Cleaning the evaporator coils can help with efficiency and should be included with a service.

On cue, on of our local residents write a letters to the editor of the newspaper complaining about the pollution impact of our Summer Festival. They have Blue Angels airplane and hydroboats...
