I haven't read the responses but my neighbor is a HVAC guy. He installed programmable thermostats in our home (one downstairs, one upstairs) and we do have it set to change the temp during the day vs at night.
Since we live in Florida, some of our neighbors have installed tinted windows in their home. Others may try to tint them themselves. On one side of our home that gets a lot of sun and are two of the kids bedrooms we have roman shades (curtains) with a blackout liner. This serves a couple purposes. One, it provides privacy as from the outside you can not even tell if there is a light on in the room and these windows are the two on the front of the home. Two, the kids keep them shut pretty much all the time unless there is a reason they want to look outside (daughter waiting for a friend, etc.) so it keeps the sun from overheating their rooms. Before the roman shades their rooms were the hottest rooms in the house from the direct sun.
