Chosen for Nani in live-action Lilo and Stitch, but should she have been?

Honestly, the live actions need to stop even with the original voice actors doing the parts. It’s ridiculous at this point. Can Disney not come up with an original idea anymore?

The idea of them doing live action adaptations so quickly that the original voice actors are able to do the part adds a whole new layer of annoyed to the whole trend for me, because I feel like it can't help but influence casting for the animated originals. If there's the possibility that a film that does well will get a quick live-action treatment, like Moana is, then there's pressure to ensure the major characters at least are voiced by people who fit the bill visually as well as well as vocally... which would exclude a whole lot of talent for being too old, or the wrong body type, or other things that have no impact on their performance voicing an animated character.

So not only is there this lack of originality in churning out remake after remake, now it risks creeping in to erode the quality of the animated originals because a creative team with an eye on a live-action version in just a few years is going to be aware right from the start of the tension of potentially having to recast a lead if they choose someone who doesn't look the part. Moana is generating all this buzz specifically because of two leads remaining the same; that couldn't happen if they'd cast a middle-aged woman for Moana (as they did with the original Belle) or a less-than-muscular guy for Maui (as they did with Gaston).
