When flying to NY in January I found out (the hard way) that boots have metal reinforcements in the heels that will alert the metal detectors. If you are wearing them, you will be asked (oops, I mean told) to remove them. At that point, you will be taken to the side where they will then wave a wand (metal detector) over your body. If you have any metal on your person(buttons or snaps on jeansand even the underwire in your bra), you will then be "felt up" by a same sex employee. I really don't know what else will alert them, but you may want to be aware when choosing your travel clothes that this can happen.
Also be aware that you cannot pack any type of scissors, including fingernail scissors.
Last, call and confirm your flight before you leave.
