I am 16 and I have gone to Disney 18 times. I know the ins and outs. Today was the first day of my mother and I’s vacation at Disney. We are both DVC members so we are staying at the hotel we belong to. Saratoga Springs. I used to love this hotel but that changed today. The day started great; we get to check in and we begin to check in. The hotel room is already ready. Great! Then the cast member goes on to tell us about Disney Springs and some of the nice things there. Then he tells us where our room is quickly.
one thing you should know before you read on is my mother has a wheelchair she needs to use at times and the people knew this. Turns out, we are the LAST ROOM. Now that wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t on the final floor and the last room. Room 7836.
On the map they show you were it is and we are like ‘oh okay it’s not that bad of a walk.’ And mom is like ‘i Can wheel there and to the bus stop.’ No she cannot. The bus stop is a good half a mile away. Now that might not be much but we are both out of shape (due to physical problems) and one of us might have to be using a wheelchair!
it doesn’t look long on the map so then after talking a while more we get back to our luggage which is outside. We have to get an escort on one of those golf cart things to get to the building our hotel is in.
We get into the elevator and we go up. There is no close door botton. It’s almost like it was ripped off. We get in the room and I go into the bathroom. The light has a major delay and when it does eventually turn on it flickers (like a strobe light) then turns on very weakly before turning fully on.
My mom is annoyed but she doesn’t know how bad the walk is since they had us take the golf cart. We walk to the bus stop and my legs already are hurting as well as my feet. We walk across the road to the bus stop and we wait. That’s fine. The bus was one of the two good things that went on.
We go to get into Epcot having already missed 2/3 of our fast pass. We get to the magic band part and it’s anything but magical. The person at the desk told us he activated them for us for everything. Then we have to go to the guest help to turn on our tickets into the park. The lady at the desk is nice and that goes fine. We get into the park and my mothers glasses break. Not Disney’s fault but it also shows more into how bad of a day it was. We try to find super glue or electrical tape to fix it but none is to be found. We would have to wait over an hour for someone to help and by then we would miss all of the fast pass.
Now we get into spaceship earth and it all goes fine. Till we get to the boy selling newspapers. It breaks down for a little. Maybe one or two minutes. Then at the end it does the same on the steep decline.
Whatever. We try not to focus on it in hopes today will get better. We go to Journey into Imagination with Figment. It breaks down and we have to do an in show exit. Thats not ideal.
We have reservations for dinner. We have time in between so we go on Nemo and friends. That doesn’t break down but the cast members rushed us in getting out and in the shells. Now my mother and I are in pain so we can only walk a few steps before having to stop. We get off and get to the exit. It is now pouring. We buy pancho (which were 26 dollars for two together) once we get them on it stops raining. We take them off and now we have 30 minutes to get to Japan from Nemo. We try and basically run but we can’t.
We end up getting there a few minutes late. That’s fine we wait and we get seated in the restaurant. It was amazing. I loved it and so did my mother.
We get back outside. We missed the last illuminations ever. We have to get through a crowd of drunk people to get to the exit to then get to the bus stop. We were the second furthest one. We are in pain and we end up standing on an over crowded bus. After waiting at least 15 minutes for one to come. We get to the bus stop and we have to walk more back to the hotel. The sprinklers are on and half of them are pointed at the sidewalk so I’m soaked.
Now we are in the room at night and my mother says “I mine as well sleep on the floor. It doesn’t even feel like there is a mattress on this bed.” She is sleeping on the pull out bed due to my back problems. She also said “I wouldn’t have the dog sleep on this thing.” There was no sheets on the pullout bed. We look in everywhere. There are no sheets or pillows for this thing. We call down and we ask for (a) if we could be moved to a room closer and (b) if we could have sheets, blankets, and pillows after they politely said no we couldn’t be moved right now. They send a person up who throws the stuff on it and leaves. He said nothing to me and only said “Hi. I have the bed stuff.” To my mother.
She tries to make the bed but the “mattress” is sown into the springs so she can’t tuck her sheets or anything. She ends up crying out of frustration and pain.
Thr five days prior to this we were in Universal (my first time) and so far it’s better. The beds are better, the service is better, and the walk wasn’t sugar coated but it was from our room to the park and it felt shorter. There were also people with carriages attached to bikes offering rides for “only a somewhat generous tip).
Disney does not seem to care anymore. It hurts seeing someone I grew up with and loved become so greedy and bad. I am upset and disappointed.

First, I am so sorry your trip has begun so badly. It is never a good way to start a much anticipated vacation.

I suggest you do two things, first, go to the main desk and ask for some help in terms of the room situation. I am not DVC so i do not know how that works, or if it willbe able to be changed, but I would ask.

In terms of mobility, it seems to me that your Mom needs a scooter. WDW is a lot of walking. A LOT, and if you are not used to that, along with punching a wheelchair, the walk is going to be worse. Most of the resorts entail long distances from point A to point B and unless you have preferred rooms, (I'm not sure that even exists in a DVC resort) you may be at the end of an already long stretch.

I am also going to suggest you modify your plans. You have not left enough time for glitches, and as you can see, trips can be littered with them. Look closely at what you have planned for the rest of your trip and see if you can make a few changes if you do not have enough time between FP etc. You first day was not ruined by DIsney, it was impacted by circumstances beyond WDW control, and while that makes for a terrible day, it was not due to greed on Disney's part.

I vacationed with a dfriend who did not book her scooter in advance. We walked in Epcot to rid Soarin and her knees were on fire. Her scooter was waiting for her first thing the following morning. The first day was not fun, but was recitified immediately. She reserved that thing on the way into Epcot when she saw how the walking was going to affect her.

I honestly think you might benefit from taking realistic plans based on your health and your mobility, and perhaps share the bed with your Mom. A sofa bed is not fun for anyone, much less a woman who is in pain to begin with.

I second the scooter idea, maybe for both of you give your stated health issues. Many of the things that happened can't be helped by Disney, rides break down, it rains (because Florida), and it's a HUGE property so of course there is a ton of walking. Are sofa pull out beds comfortable? Unfortunately no. Being DVC and going so much I feel like these are known things, but I don't know. There are usually sheets, a blanket, and pillows on the top shelf of the closet in the room; no clue if someone took them out of your room but I have never been in a DVC room that didn't have them (also, a lot of the house keeping staff don't speak the best english, I always give them the benefit of the doubt when they don't say much). I would suggest modifying your plans, because like the previous poster it doesn't seem like you've left yourselves with enough time for error, and I would also suggest going to the front desk to speak with them about being moved. Calling gets your to a centralized call center, not the main desk at your resort, and those folks generally can't help you with that. If you've already been at Universal for 5 days my guess is that you are already worn out (although from being there myself I know there is a lot less walking than at WDW), but try to take it at a slower pace and relax. Things happen, stuff happens that is out of yours and WDWs control, just try and make the most of it or, from my experience, you'll almost bring the negative stuff on yourself.

I'm truly sorry that you're dealing with this right now, but as others have suggested a scooter will make so much of a difference! I do think that from your pain and frustration came anger over things that Disney can't control (rain, ride issues, missed fastpasses, etc.). As a general rule of thumb, I never make fastpasses for my first travel day as issues can arise that would cause me to miss them, and I can't tell you the last time I've rode Spaceship Earth where it didn't slow down at one point or another. As for the sofa bed, I will say that when we stayed at the Beach Club in July, we too didn't have sheets or blankets for the bed, and I had to call down to have them bring them up. I actually took them from the cast member at the door, and then made the bed myself as best as I could because I didn't think it was their responsibility, however, with your mom's mobility issues it might have been a good idea to have asked them for help in that situation as the bed can be a bit difficult to make. It was definitely a first for us after being DVC members for so long, but now I know to look for that the next time we check in. I honestly think you need to take things at a slower pace and be okay with not doing everything, as it will make your vacation much more enjoyable. Also, I agree that you should probably go down to the front desk and speak directly to a cast member about requesting to be moved to a different room. Good luck and I really hope things get better for you!

I think both of you would be much happier on a scooter.

Unless she has one to bring from home, the OP is likely too young for a rental ECV. In-park rentals and most third-party vendors require that the user be 18 yrs old. Randy’s will sometimes rent to an older teen who is familiar with drinking one.

I agree an ECV would be helpful for mom.

OP, sorry you are getting off to a rough start. Hopefully the sun is shining on s better day when you woke this morning.

Enjoy your vacation!

I’m sorry you are having issues. As people mentioned rides do break down and that is beyond the control of Disney. Spaceship Earth might have stooped to load or unload a person with a disability. Each time we’ve ridden it always seems to stop.

Room requests aren’t guaranteed- don’t know if you requested a specific location or not. It sounds like the location is not ideal for you, did you go to front desk and ask if another room is available? Do not call as it is a call center.

Regarding the getting tired- you’ve been there numerous times before and just did Universal for several days. You know the layouts of the parks and distances you cover daily. Disney on its own is tiring for most people, put physical limitations on top of that (plus 5 days at Universal), it’s understandable you are having issues. That is something only you can control. Maybe take a rest day or space out FastPasses so you can rest.

Disney does it’s best but at times we need to accept the fact that things are beyond their control. We also need to accept our own limitations (physical). You need to allow plenty of time to get places knowing how slow or fast your mobility is. It appears you might not have done this.

I’m sorry your mom cried but this isn’t all Disney’s issue.

Maybe this post is done out of frustration and isn't meant to come off like it sounds but I'm stuck on the above
If you have been 18 times I would think all of these issues are something that you've encountered before. Maybe not all at once but all are common and most are your personal situation, not anything Disney can control. You have limitations that are not Disney's to work around.
A half mile to the bus, that's peanuts compared to how much walking is done at the parks. As someone who's been 18 times would well know
Horrible sofa beds at SSR, extremely well reported. Your mom is right, a dog shouldn't have to sleep on them.
The light in the bathroom, unfortunately, this is how CFL lights are. If you are from the US I would expect you have these at home. Delay response and slow to warm are normal operations.
Rain and rides breaking down. Well, obviously Rain is not on Disney. They control a lot but weather ain't one, LOL
Breaking down rides, these would be great to eliminate but everyone wants more park hours, less closed time. This means rides are running longer and harder and break down. Machines have limits.
I think you'll go far in improving your trip to take suggestions mentioned.
Don't book things so close together your physical limitations mean you can't make the times
Don't try to push yourself beyond your limits, which only leads to grumpiness and increases frustration

Understandable to a degree due to liability but then again, what is someone of that age supposed to do? Just not go? Even if they have a DL does no one rent? Seems a bit unfair there's no solution to someone who can drive but may have an issue that they can't get around easily

Hi, I am a DVC member with SSR points and tbh, I rarely stay there because of the size, and the room configuration. Those sofa beds are really not comfortable. For future trips, I'd suggest OKW (The studios have 2 beds and are bigger than others). Then request an adapted room suitable for a wheelchair user. Hospitality House/Preferred rooms are no more points than other studios elsewhere on site. We've never had an issue getting a suitable room for my niece who uses a wheelchair. The rooms have also been no more than 200 yards from a bus stop.

Not much help right now I know.

OP, you've gotten a lot of good suggestions. You might want to hope over to the disABILITIES board for some additional information.

I understand your frustrations, but a lot of your issues are not Disneys fault at all, and maybe a little more on your planning. If you stated your Mom's needs for a room closer to transportation, then go to the front desk, again, and ask them to change your room.

I don't think I've ever been on Spacesip Earth when the ride hasn't stopped a few times.

With both of your having physical limitations, you should look into scooter rental, and try not to be so aggressive in your scheduling.

Thank you OP for the trip report. Sorry it was a crazy start. I only groaned when I read you missed the last illuminations, but then again seasoned WDW vets who really wanted to see it would have made it a higher priority, even than eating dinner beforehand. If it was a low priority, then much wasn't lost.

Reports like this are why I wont book SSR. I rode the bus through once as a transfer resort & sooooo many stops make that a no-go.

A few take aways I hope readers get:

1) always BYO rain gear or be prepared to purchase some without complaint.
2) WDW is a lot of walking & even with a scooter or wheelchair is not for everyone. When the trips are no longer fun maybe its time to stop, or spread them out more.
3) Not every need can (or will) be met by WDW. Sure some times/days will be fun, but others will not, its a WDW realty that not every moment is magical.

I hope the rest of the trip rebounds.

So so sorry, @Dizzy8203. I hope your vacation has better moments ahead.

I agree- Universal and its resorts offer much better customer service. We stay there and are always happy. Even when something goes wrong, they always make it right! And at WDW, the Swan & Dolphin also offer stellar customer service!

Sending good vibes your way!

I'm sorry that your trip is not what you had hoped. I'm going to also say rent scooters or something to help with the walking. If you need extra time to move around the parks your need to plan for it. And if your not happy with something bring it up asap.

So sorry about the rough start! We all have "those days" but it's rough when one happens on a Disney day.

I agree with slowing down, and hope the rest of the trip gets better!

Something seems fishy about this post to me, as well as the fact that this person joined and then posted shortly after and hasn't commented on their own thread since.

Well, hopefully it's just that the trip got better, and she is too busy to post.

That's good to hear, as we are considering Swan & Dolphin for out next Disney trip!

We have to get through a crowd of drunk people to get to the exit to then get to the bus stop. We were the second furthest one
When did that change? ssR and OKW were always the two closest stops at Epcot.
He said nothing to me and only said “Hi. I have the bed stuff.” To my mother.
Most likely because your Mom is the adult?
I second the scooter idea, maybe for both of you give your stated health issues
Most vendors won't rent to anyone under 18. Randy's is the exception if they feel a teen is responsible.
and I can't tell you the last time I've rode Spaceship Earth where it didn't slow down at one point or another.
Yeah. It stops if someone needs extra time to get on/off.
If you have been 18 times I would think all of these issues are something that you've encountered before.
Like you said, not all at once, but stuff happens.
Understandable to a degree due to liability but then again, what is someone of that age supposed to do? Just not go? Even if they have a DL does no one rent? Seems a bit unfair there's no solution to someone who can drive but may have an issue that they can't get around easily
I think it's a contract issue.
Those sofa beds are really not comfortable
This. I found it more comfortable just to sleep on the sofa as is

I will say I'm a little puzzled over how the OP feels that this is all Disney's fault. Yes, maybe they can help switch rooms but the rest is on the OP and mom. If you have been 18 times in the last 16 years, then you would know what it takes to do Disney and how to plan your day. You would know that there is tons of walking and you would need a scooter at least for the mom; not renting one is their fail. They also should know the distance between Nemo and Japan and maybe should have just went to Japan knowing the time it would take..plus they could have taken a boat. Disney probably doesn't enjoy their rides breaking down either so I'm pretty sure they didn't do it on purpose. And if seeing the last Illuminations was a must then why make a dinner reservation even remotely close to show time? If you aren't able to walk the amount it takes for Disney and aren't willing to rent a scooter, then maybe Disney isn't for you...or focus on better time management to allow for breaks. Sorry, but not sorry.
