Smoking concerns

I am frustrated smoking is allowed on Fantasy. How can I be guaranteed not to be placed by smokers who try to use balcony in cabins to smoke?

There is only one place on the ship where smoking is allowed. That said, people often smoke on their verandahs. I would report it if you smell it and see if security has any luck finding the offender, because it is a serious safety issue. If I recall correctly, there has been at least one serious fire on another line from someone smoking on their verandah on a cruise.

I know many people really enjoy smoking, but the people who did on their verandahs make me wish Disney didn't allow any cigarettes or cigars onboard, because it can really put a damper on balcony use. I think my last cruise was the first where we never smelled any cigarette smoke while on the verandah, so hopefully it's getting better.

There is no 100% guarantee, but there if someone does and gets caught, they can be fined.
Remember, the passengers on a cruise ship are a mix on international people where smoking laws vary. Disney has restrictions, but those are Disney rules, since the ship is not governed by U.S. smoking rules.
I listened in to an interesting conversation between and an international passenger and an officer on the Magic. This passenger, who was fully cooperating with the smoking rules pointed out, those restrictions in his homeland would be against the law. Just like the controversy recently on other lines about CBD gummies. Legal in many places in the U.S., but still illegal where U.S. Federal law applies like national parks. And in some parts of the world, like say the Philippines, your could be sentenced to death for possession.

This happened to us a number of years ago. We smelt smoke on the first day from someone on a verandah, called guest services and we never smelt it again. We gave them an idea of where it was and it was quickly handled.

As other have said it is a significant safety issue on top of very rude.

The smoking area on the Fantasy isn't bad and I never remember being bothered by it and I am very grumpy about smoking.

We have had more luck on DCL of avoiding smokers on verandahs than other cruise lines. Being high up might help. Not with the next door neighbors though.

Second post I've seen in as many days about smoking on a cruise ship. Interesting . . .

Anyway, I think DCL (or any cruise line) would lose a decent chunk of their guests if they didn't allow smoking on board at all. Not sure they'd want to take that stance. At least having it confined to two places on the ship helps.

We were on the Fantasy a couple weeks ago and smelled smoke when out on our verandah twice. I guessed it was someone a couple staterooms 'forward' of us, and the smoke was wafting back to us (since it was a sea day so we were moving). I could never pinpoint where it was coming from, though, so I didn't report it. In hindsight, I should have, even if I couldn't give an exact stateroom/location, and they could have investigated further.

I’ve never had issues on DCL
Princess on the other hand where smoking was allowed in the casino and you had no choice but to pass by it in order to get to the theater
Ugh. I had that problem on Carnival. You pretty much had to pass through the smoky casino, or take a completely roundabout route.

That was our issue on Royal Caribbean. We booked last minute, didn’t really pick our cabin carefully, and when going to dinner had a choice of walking through the smoky casino or going up a flight, walking through the shopping area, and then down a flight. Yuck!

My dad is a pipe smoker and he wouldn't cruise if he couldn't smoke. That said, he would never smoke on the verandah since it's against the rules. He has no trouble going to the smoking area, especially since it's really nice. The parks are another story. Since the eliminated all of the smoking areas, even the remote ones, he hasn't been back for a number of years and consequently, neither have we. I am not a smoker and I absolutely hate it around kids, but I do think totally eliminating it, is a little over the top.

I'm just curious, how much of an issue is this? (people smoking on their verandas) I know any responses will be anecdotal, but I'm curious what experiences people have had. I would be fairly ticked off if I couldn't enjoy my veranda because of smoke (both my husband and I hate cigarette smoke and are very sensitive to it).

Just as it seems amazing to us today that not that long ago people were allowed to smoke on airplanes, one day it will seem amazing that people were ever permitted to smoke on cruise ships.
If I remember correctly smoking used to be permitted on the DCL Verandas up until 2013/14. There were even ashtrays mounted on the dividers. That could be why some "occasional cruisers" think it's still permitted.

Anecdotally, in 14 cruises, all in veranda staterooms, I have never had a problem with smelling smoke on the veranda.

I have noticed smoke while walking near the smoking area on the upper deck and maybe on Deck 4 at night, but have been able to move away from it easily.

I think we are batting 4 out of 5 of needing to come in from the verandah or shut the door at least once on each DCL cruise due to smokers on other verandahs. It's the only reason I mentioned an outright ban, because I really don't care if people do it in the designated area. I just wonder if it is the only way to really stop it. But, maybe the better approach is a very harsh penalty from DCL for verandah smoking and more education upfront that it won't be tolerated. In the end, I'm just glad DCL doesn't allow it indoors. It's a huge plus and one of the reasons we are sailing Celebrity next as we branch out from DCL.

In the big scheme of things, it really isn't a huge issue unless it happens every single time you are on the verandah, which has never happened to us.

Interesting. The only time smoke was an issue for me on a cruise when in 2016 on NCL when it was inside the casino and basically in the middle of the ship. I came home with a horrible cough from that trip. I haven't had any issues on cruises since that. My asthma would be really bothered by that and I would be a "Karen" and say something if I smelled it in any area other than a designated area.

Smoking indoors, and folks walking while smoking outdoors constantly is why we will not sail with Royal again.

That said the only place I have had an issue with it on DCL is the decks where the smoking sections are located, with it being so concentrated it is just a space we avoid all together for the duration of the cruise. Hearing folks concerns about cruising out of San Juan and cultural differences with smoking, I am crossing my fingers we don't have issues with it in April.

I can't remember every time or every ship. I know out of the 4 DCL cruises we have done, all in verandahs, we have had to close the door due to smoking at least 2-5 times. We use the balcony frequently, usually multiple times a day. We have experienced it on other cruise lines, but it seems that was longer ago. We have had issues at hotels too, particularly in Hawaii. However, I have to admit in the last 10 years it has massively improved, both in the states and in Europe. I am very sensitive to it and actually allergic. It often causes me to have a coughing fit.
