What, pray tell, is a lantern bug? Is it something like a firefly?
Yuck - they sound terrible.it’s a bug that was originally native to Asia and came over around 2014 and has no natural predators here so is running rampant. It eats the sap from trees, killing them. It’s ruining fruit crops and it also creates weird sap fall out that attracts bees and wasps and turns into a fungus and mold.
they are horrible and everywhereIn this area.

@Mysterian last year there was a story on the news about a lady who was killing them and then making earrings out of the wings.
That's a good idea. If she needs them intact to make earrings, how does she kill them?
There's a very good article about the problem in this month's Smithsonian Magazine.
They are large (about as big as an adult's thumb with the wings out), and tend to be very slow and poor flyers. If they eventually show up around here, I'd be tempted to suck em' up with a shop vac that has a nice little poison cocktail sloshing in the bottom.
