I have family that have home in Encinitas, Ca near Legoland.
The Moonlight State Beach is clean and safe and has volleyball courts and beautiful sunsets. It is one of the few beaches that still allow fire pits and they are usually snagged early morn but shared by nightfall. Really fun to see fire on the beach at night. Recommend Days Inn or Best Western straight walk downhill but that walk uphill feels much further.
Plus it is a metro stop (not Amtrak) in center of town. Cool town to walk around with pizza and Hawaiian food Restaurants.
Hotels fill up so do not arrive without reservation.
The Amtrak runs North from Old Town San Diego ( walk to catch ferry to Coronado) Then the Solana Beach Stop is cool town with Belly Up Tavern for local music venues Check their calendar online , then keeps traveling to Anaheim passing San Juan Capistrano , San Clemente Pier, The Oceanside, and Anaheim.
The metro rail is shared tracks but different local stops...
