I love credit cards so much!

So, I am not super new to credit cards and points but we’ve kept things pretty simple so far. We have a 4,000 orthodontist bill coming up and we want to do a few trips soon, so it is time for a new card.

I am having new card paralysis, though. Too many options, I just don’t know what to do!

I am typing it all out, mostly for my benefit but if anyone wants to give their opinion, I would love to hear it!

Here is what we had/have:

Disney Visa (1/15 or so)
Was an authorized user on DH’s CSP (rookie mistake)(1/16)
CSP (2/16) closed before annual fee hit, probably should have downgraded to Freedom
Barclay Arrival Plus (3/17) plan to close before one year
Southwest Plus (6/17)
Southwest Premier (6/17) Companion pass until the end of this year!

DH has:

CSP (1/16) He wants to cancel ASAP before we pay the annual fee again
Freedom (5/16 ish, don’t have the exact date tracked but shortly after CSP)
Arrival Plus (4/17)
Southwest Plus (9/17)
Southwest Premier (9/17) If all posts well, he will have companion pass until the end of next year

We have four kids and we use points to get as much as we can for as little as we can. So, cheap decent hotels and cheap flights are our thing. We have flights pretty well covered with the Southwest cards, so we really need hotel rooms to go with them. We also drive a lot and aren’t afraid of a roadtrip, so hotels are really our focus.

Our specific trips coming up are:

Long weekend for the boys in Chicago

A Universal Studio Trip for my Harry Potter freak daughter’s birthday. Definitely two of us will go, would love to make this a family trip if we could figure out how to get an amazing deal on tickets. Like the idea of onsite hotel via UR but would need a lot more of them, we’ve run very low.

Hawaii for me and DH at the end of 2019. Fingers crossed we can get a SW flight there.

We just did a big WDW trip but I am not against another one of those in the near future if we can swing it.

So, we usually do domestic trips that are kid friendly, nothing fancy. DH and I have done an occasional international trip but not often.

I am super familiar with Chase cards, like having Ultimate Rewards and being able to transfer them (especially to Hyatt, we get great value that way).

So, we are both close to dropping down to 4/24. My instinct is to go with a new Chase card. We considered the CSR at the beginning and really regret not getting it then with the high bonus and double dipping on credits. I just don’t know if it is worth it now. Especially since we’re anticipating some large expenses soon (see orthodontist bill above plus oral surgies! Ugh!) and that $450 would hurt a bit right now.

Considering other Chase cards (I could get another CSP after this month, I think? It is 24 months after approval or when they were awarded?) I’m a little bummed by the fact that there are no extra high bonuses right now.

Not being able to transfer UR once we cancel the CSP stinks, so it would be good to replace it with something else that would allow us to do that. We just can’t justify keeping the CSP again this year.

We are also considering the Hyatt card with bonus and statement credit. We would both really love and use those points (rooms are big enough for our big family!) but I don’t know if it is worth eating up a spot before we get another Chase card.

And now the new AMEX Hilton card is on my radar. I don’t know anything about Hilton points or what they are good for. Best for hoteI stays presumably? have always wanted one for those AMEX offers that I always miss out on, though. And 100,000 seems like a lot but I know it isn’t equal to an UR. Definitely need to research this more. Also, there were some murmurings about AMEX cards and Hawaii, would love to hear more about this.
Hello Business cards! CIP. 80,000 UR, minimum spend 4K, won't count against your 5/24 status (but you can't get the card if you are over 5/24). Then, you refer your spouse 20K UR for you, 80K UR for them (but another 4K spend to meet so space them out). Yep, you'll need a business first, you can search our thread here for many ideas! We have rental owners, ebayers (hi!), etsy people, etc. anyone can have a business, just apply as a sole proprietor and use an SSN as the tax id and then wait. Most everyone has to wait after approval but approvals generally come within a couple weeks of applying. People have business revenue from $200 up I think. Worst that happens is you get denied and take a hard hit, best is 80K UR points and no hit to your 5/24 status. There are also other Chase cards but imho this is the most lucrative. (AF waived first year to boot, 1.25x point redemption and transfer partners will also remain intact!)

Amex business cards. There are a slew of these and others much more knowledgeable can chime in on which ones are hot right now ;)

As for a great deal on Univ tickets, imho nope. My last couple trips I searched and searched and there just isn't one. Univ Orlando knows they have the best Harry Potter stuff and to really experience it the obscenely price park hoppers are required... Bottom line those tickets are EXPENSIVE. Hopefully you can save up enough money elsewhere to cover the ticket costs for other fam members.

@babyready You are eligible for the Chase card bonuses again 24 mos AFTER the bonus posted. So, you'd want to figure that out to see when you could get another CSP. Can you go ahead and PC the remaining CSP you have? Maybe to a FU?

For your next card, what about the CIP? I don't see that in your current cards. You need some kind of 'small business' but pretty much anything counts :) Selling locally, online, rental income, etc. I have 4 kids also and I am guessing you are like me in that I am always throwing some outgrown baby or kid item on CL or ebay. That qualifies as a business! The CIP has 80k UR bonus with 5k spend in 90 days. Seems like with that ortho bill, you could easily meet that.

The CIP would not count against your 5/24. You need to be under 5/24 to get it so you need to wait until you drop down. But then you'd still be 4/24 after and you could consider double dipping that last spot with another CSP and something else. The Hyatt is not under 5/24 so unless you need that card now, I'd wait until you are over 5/24 to go for it. You and your dh could each get CIP's and that could keep you busy for awhile!
I like the way you think, hahahaha!
ETA: and also how @SouthFayetteFan thinks!... gosh, step away from what I'm typing for a few mins to work and look what happens, our thread hums right along without me!

Not to step on @Lain 's toes but we stayed there for one night before transferring onsite. Imho...
Pros: amazing price between black friday and UR points and I feel we definitely got our money's worth, in fact we are looking at booking it again because it's one of the cheapest options I can find under "decent hotels" basically. Very pretty bar/lounge area when you walk in, if I stayed there for a few nights I'd totally chill there for a break from the room. Hilton members check-in had no line that evening, and there were a few groups of people standing in line to check in at the main desk. I was so unsure about it I asked is it for any Hilton member (no status) and they said yep! At least 20 mins saved there!
Cons: it's huge. The hotel is massive. We felt like mice going through a maze trying to find our room. The beds were lousy, heater smelled weird. Parking $$ (but many hotels have that downside).
-Didn't get a chance to visit pool, had intended to as I love relaxing in a hot tub but it was too late by the time we arrived (LA traffic, ugh!)

Conclusion: would stay again for one night, not for multiple nights. As a matter of fact I'm a day or two away from probably booking this hotel for 1 night before moving onsite again for our Food & Wine trip in Mar. Actually, hotels seem to be booking up for that day so maybe I'd better go do that now! Reason not for multiple nights: too much walking inside the hotel (it's just too darn big after being in DL all day!) and miserable beds.

Thank you! You're making me consider maybe booking just a night there just to see how we may like it for future trips lol. Esp. @Lain reminded me that I can use the Hilton offer on my Amex cards. The only issue would be transferring luggage and the time in/out. And probably the size...DH has already complained that after a long day at WDW, the last thing he wants to do is put more miles on his blistered feet :rotfl2:

I wouldn't call myself a DLR expert, but I also don't mind sharing my thoughts, good and bad.

We actually really like the Hilton Anaheim! It's a convention hotel, right next to the Anaheim Convention Center, so the decor is very contemporary with no Disney theming despite being so close to Disneyland.

The rooms are always clean. We love the beds and pillows; super comfortable. But the carpeting and upholstery in some rooms and common areas look like they could use a refresh. We've stayed in some rooms where the floor felt a little uneven. The rooms have floor to ceiling windows! Since we're Hilton Gold members, we always get upgraded to a high floor and occasionally we'll get a Disneyland view. If you get a Disneyland view, you're looking at DCA in the foreground, with the back of Radiator Springs and (the now retired) Paradise Pier closest to you. You'll get a view of Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout to the right and should be able to see the Matterhorn and Sleeping Beauty Castle. And catch the fireworks from your room! However, the park does look like it's far away and you'd probably need a telephoto lens to get a good shot from this distance. (We've also gotten views of the pool and the next door Marriott.)

Hilton Gold members also get a complimentary breakfast, but we always decline at check-in and are offered HH points because we'd rather open up Disneyland and eat in the parks or in DTD. There's a full service Starbucks in the lobby, which is really popular and gets backed up as the morning progresses. However, there's a special line for Hilton Gold and Diamond members. I believe the Starbucks in the lobby is a franchise location owned by Hilton, so you can use Starbucks gift cards, the Starbucks app to earn stars, but you can't redeem stars for food or drinks, or order ahead on the app. I always wake up really early, get down there around 6-6:30 a.m., and there's no line; I'll grab coffee for my wife and me and get ready to head out to make rope drop.

The pool area is fairly decent. There's a large rectangular pool, hot tub, and a splash area for kids. DD4 really enjoys the splash area, but if you're looking for pool time for the kids, then the Howard Johnson Anaheim, the Courtyard Marriott, and the Disneyland Hotel all have more awesome pool amenities.

The Hilton is HUGE! I believe it's the biggest hotel in all of OC. We've been put in rooms that were like a 5 minute walk to the elevators. Never again, so we always request in our reservation notes a room near, but not next to the elevators. If you stay there during a convention, some kind of tournament, or holiday weekend, the elevators do get packed and there can be a wait.

We find the Hilton almost always has a better price, in cash or points, than the nearby Marriott or Sheraton, which have similar amenities. We don't think the Hilton Anaheim is necessarily the best use of HH points, though, as standard rooms go for something like 30k HH points/night. However, Amex often has an Amex Offer for Hilton that gives a statement credit off room charges of $250, $300, or whatever other minimum amount. If you have the Amex Offer on several cards, ask the front desk to do a split tender and try to maximize the credits. Hilton points may be wildly inflated, but they're also easy to earn with a cash stay and all the promotions going on at any given time. I think we usually sign up for 2 or 3 different promotions that earn bonus HH points for every stay. Self parking is $16/night. There are pretty hefty resort fees and taxes. That's pretty typical of the chain hotels.

My wife and I have been going to Disneyland pretty regularly since 2009 and stayed at the Hilton a lot. During that time, we've racked our brains and tried various ways to shorten our trip from the hotel to the parks and back again. I think the fastest way is just to walk it. Like I mentioned before, there's a side service street along the front of the hotel garage that connects to Katella, make a right on Katella, then cross the street at Harbor, all the way to DLR's eastern gateway. This takes about 10 minutes, and maybe another 10 minutes at bag check. Harbor in the morning is a nice walk along tree-lined streets. At night, it can get a little sketchier with people hawking wares, begging for change, or passed out drunk at bus stops. We've never felt like we were in any danger. We've also tried taking our car and parking at Mickey & Friends since we have Signature APs with included parking, but it's about 5 minutes to the car and out the garage, another 5 minutes or more to the theme park parking lot, then you have to find parking, then down the escalator to the bag check, another 5-10 minutes, then a 5-10 minute wait for the tram to take you to DTD. This all could easily take up to 30 minutes or more. Another alternative is to walk across the street on Harbor into the Toy Story parking lot, which takes about 5 minutes, line up and take a shuttle bus to the bus drop-off at the eastern gateway near bag check. But the walking and waiting for shuttles adds up, and I don't think you're saving much time if any over just walking to DLR.

Just two adults! But great information to take into consideration, esp. the 5+ min walk to elevators potentially (DH wouldn't be happy with me ha). Will also need to factor in the resort fee situation since Hyatt House on points (12K) looks like it covers that aspect and I think someone else above confirmed they booked on points and wasn't charged anything additional. The only thing is parking, which I expect, as you said, from the large chains. Hilton appears to be slightly less than Hyatt ($18 I read and potentially $11 on top of that if staying after a certain time :faint:). Appreciate you bringing up the Amex offers. If we do decide to stay for a night or two, I would have forgotten about those, especially if cash is the better option.

@babyready,

Very quickly, it looks like you and DH are both 5/24. You should be at 4/24, but Chase will see your AU on DH’s CSP as an account opened within the last 24 months. Two things you could do: (1) call or secure message Chase to remove you as an AU from DH's CSP, give it some time, then check to see if that CSP AU account is gone from your personal credit report; (2) just wait a few more days and let it drop off naturally, because we're already coming up on the end of January and that AU account opened in 1/16 should be off Chase's radar next month.

Next, I agree with @wendow.

Once you're sure you're under 5/24, you should apply for the CIP. That'll give you 80k UR points after spending $5,000 in the first 3 months of opening your card. Your $4,000 orthodontist bill will take care of most of that minimum spend. What the CIP also gives you is a premium UR travel card to which you can pool all your UR points, and get 25% greater value out of those points when you use the CIP's UR portal to book travel. In effect, this replaces your DH's soon to be canceled (or product changed) CSP as your premium card with which UR points are worth 1.25% towards travel. The CIP has an annual fee of $95 -- same as the CSP -- but you're getting 80k UR points from the signup.

You have to be under 5/24 to get the CIP, but it won't count against new card accounts opened in the last 24 months. Eventually, you'll want to refer your DH for the CIP, since that'll earn him 80k UR and you 20k UR for the referral.

This will buy you some time for you to figure out when your CSP bonus from 2/16 posted. Count 24 months from then and you'll be eligible to dip that Sapphire bonus again! But don't just get the CSP again. Get the CSP and Chase Sapphire Reserve for a combined 100k UR in signup bonuses if you can manage the combined $8,000 spending requirement in the first 3 months of both cards. If you've been following along, Chase has a new "one Sapphire" rule that means you can only hold one open Sapphire card at a time. If you apply for and get the CSP, you won't be able to get the CSR later on (at least 2 years) and you'll miss out on the CSR's 50k UR signup bonus, its superior travel benefits, and 1.5x value on UR points through the Chase portal. The CSR does come with a $450 annual fee, but that's offset by a very easy to redeem $300 travel credit. Currently, the only way around Chase's one Sapphire rule is to apply for both the CSR and CSP on the same day, and get both cards approved on the same day. If this is a strategy you're interested in, let us know and we can walk you through it.

As for your DH's CSP, don't cancel it. Call Chase and ask that they "product change" the CSP to either the Chase Freedom or Freedom Unlimited. Both are no fee cards and give you another card to work with when there are promotions like the Chase Pay 10x UR at Best Buy going on right now. As you may know, the Freedom has rotating bonus categories that offer 5x UR on purchases up to $1,500; and the Freedom Unlimited offers 1.5x UR on all purchases. You can decide which one is a better fit for your wallet.

Booking Disneyland offsite hotels with UR: Just booked for 1 night before moving onsite for our Disneyland trip with URs on Chase portal. That thing is being- is being- is being----- gah!!! There are not appropriate words to describe how ENTIRELY screwed up their online booking system is! I knew from my basic Disneyland knowledge and Expedia what hotels I was interested in and what was available and I could not get them to show up. And I'm traveling so yes internet where I'm at but cell phone coverage sucks so no calling Chase. After an hour of switching between browsers and searching different ways and sorting different ways I finally got UR to show Hilton Anaheim and Marriott to show as well Residence Inn maingate, residence inn convention center, Springfield Suites convention center and hyatt place convention center (everything I was interested in). Almost booked refundable rooms at Hilton Anaheim but found I could get refundable rooms we wanted for just $10 more and free breakfast and better beds (imho- @Lain got super comfy beds at hilton anaheim, I'm jealous!) so I changed my mind and went Hyatt Place, which of course meant another half an hour of searching to get hyatt place to show up again (eventually, I searched Garden Grove instead of Anaheim and got the hotels to show- gah!! If I had a stress ball I would have thrown in across the room and broken something!). And then right before confirmation Chase popped up and said we found a cheaper rate, do you want it? I'd never seen it before so paranoid me said: no! they're trying to put me in a non-refundable room or the wrong type and greedy me said: YES! more UR points for ME!. Greedy me was louder and won (after I clicked and re-confirmed everything and double checked I could still cancel). They were indeed the exact same rooms, just a couple bucks cheaper on each. Weird. (For those looking, I wouldn't recommend Hyatt Place as a Disneyland hotel if you're looking to walk to the parks, it's too far to walk imho.)

That was ridiculous, time for work to finish and to watch some Netflix with a big glass of wine... yes, I'm on the West Coast but it's 5 o'clock on the East Coast right?

Wanted to share my ShopRite experience today.
DH and I both went. Here's what each of us were buying:

DH- $200 VGC + a few groceries
Me- $300 Disney GC + $100 Petco GC + a few groceries

I went first and attempted to use Chase Pay with my CSR. Declined by the register. A manager came over and tried a couple more times, declined. He said they've been having tons of trouble with Chase Pay and the same transaction will be denied on one register and work on another. Because he wanted to figure out what exactly the problem was, he brought us to a closed register and we started trying different things with my order.
Original order on new register: Declined
Only groceries: Approved
$300 Disney GC: Denied

Then we switched to DH's order, which he was paying for with his CSP (a bill of $208 including GCs already worked without issue in a different store.)
Original order on new register: Declined
Second time scanning code: Declined
Third time scanning code: Approved

Back to my order:
$100 Petco GC: Approved
$300 Disney GC: Approved

So now I have 3 separate charges on my CSR, two of which are clearly gift cards. I hope they don't flag me for that. I half expected to get a fraud alert after this whole episode. I give the manager a lot of credit. We were helping him as much as he was trying to help us, but I'm glad he took the time to investigate further. There seems to be absolutely no rhyme or reason to whether Chase Pay will or will not work. If I wasn't getting such a good return and needed some Disney money for my trip next week I wouldn't have bothered sticking around.

OH! And there was actually a GIANT STAND-UP BANNER by the registers and a table full of literature to announce the introduction of Chase Pay, that was actually STAFFED BY A WOMAN the whole time we were there.

Wow! I like how you all think! I haven't paid nearly enough attention to business cards. Probably because we would have to be very loose with our definition of "business" :)

The CIP sounds perfect to start. Both of us doing a CIP right away would be great.

I really appreciate the advice. THANK YOU!!
Make sure after the first one gets a CIP they get approved and then generate a referral for the other one! You can join us on reddit in our closed DIS churners group if you want to spread some points love on your first CIP with anyone here, DM @SouthFayetteFan or @Albort to get in if you haven't already.

I wouldn't recommend both you and DH do CIP right away. It looks like you and DH will both drop to 4/24 next month. Decide which one of you will apply for the CIP first. One spouse should apply for the CIP first (80k UR signup bonus), then that spouse will generate a referral link (20k UR referral bonus) for the other spouse to apply for the CIP (80k UR signup bonus). This way, the first spouse who has the CIP can get a referral bonus when the second spouse applies for the CIP.

ETA: @gottalovepluto beat me to it!

Here's a helpful recent blog post from MMS about applying for Chase business cards: https://millionmilesecrets.com/2018...o-complete-a-chase-business-card-application/

Oh, I meant right away in the next few month. Not at the same time. Thanks to both of you for pointing out the referral bonus, would love to take advantage of that!

Thanks to everyone posting about using Chase Pay at Best Buy. Just was able to use Chase Pay to start my Disney gift card fund for our December trip. The cashier was a hip, 20-something woman who was not at all phased by my wanting to do separate transactions or use Chase Pay or purchase gift cards -- she acted like the whole thing was no big deal. I'm a very reluctant adopter of new technology so I feel like I have overcome a big hurdle with this successful mobile payment thing.

The bad news: when I came home and checked my Chase account to make sure I had used the correct cards, I discovered a fraudulent charge on my CSR. The charge was made yesterday, for $400 event tickets from some LA place. Hopefully Chase will have no issues seeing that I didn't make the charge. I still have the card (not lost or stolen) so I'm not sure how someone would have gotten the info.

When I used Chase Pay in Hawaii, I ended up teaching a young 20-something cashier how it worked. LOL.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Hope it all works out. Your card was probably skimmed when you swiped it somewhere. Grocery stores, gas stations, ATMs, and any card slot that's outside and exposed are popular targets. You'll want to ask Chase for a replacement as the thieves now have your information and can probably keep putting fraudulent charges on that card. It's a hassle, but better safe than sorry.

I’ve had my CSR and SW cards compromised with fraudulent charges. The CSR, Chase caught and the SW I caught. Both times it was painless. I spoke briefly to the fraud department, they removed the transactions and overnighted me a new card with a new account number. Super easy!

do you mean you link the cc you're using (thru chasepay) with the app?

@Albort and @Lain explained it better than I did below.

theres an app on the apple/android store called ChasePay. This is the app you need to pay for things. Once you download the app, you will login with your chase credentials. THere is a button where it lets you select which card you want to use to pay. Once thats loaded up, take what you want to buy at best buys. When they are done scanning, open the Chase Pay App, you will see on the bottom there is a Pay button. click that. your screen will go super bright and there will be a QR code. Let the cashier scan that code. After that, it should complete the transaction and you walk out with your items.

Download the Chase Pay app. Log in with your Chase account login/password. All the credit cards in your name (not AUs) under that account will be available to select and pay. Select the card you want to use, click Pay, and the app will generate a QR code for the cashier to scan.

Love it! We tried to use Chase Pay at a store last weekend. They clearly did Apple Pay (insignia at register) so I asked if the accepted Chase Pay. Also. The young cashier looked at me and shrugged "not sure what that is"
DH and I are both over 50, trying to explain all this newfangled stuff to the youngun'. :rotfl2:

DISchurners SURVEY UPDATE
If you haven't taken it yet: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/F3HVYDH Have at it! Hopefully you enjoy a trip down memory lane with all of your cards!

I'm going to leave the survey open until Tuesday next week then post the results. However, in the meantime how about a fun little challenge:

So far there is a clear TOP card and 3 cards tied for second... Any Guesses on what those cards are? I'll give the answer tomorrow after people have a chance to post their guesses!

Download the Chase Pay app. Log in with your Chase account login/password. All the credit cards in your name (not AUs) under that account will be available to select and pay. Select the card you want to use, click Pay, and the app will generate a QR code for the cashier to scan.

The UR earning potential has totally motivated me these last two weeks to figure out both Apple Pay and now Chase Pay. I actually think Chase Pay was a little easier. Bringing the QR code up was less stressful for me than trying to get it to almost magically scan as with Apple Pay.

As far as Best Buy and the rewards program, I am a total novice and just joined this fall when there was the deal on the Amex cards. it is worth signing up though as all i bought were the gift cards on the Amex deal and they then sent me a $5 off reward coupon. They track it through your phone number, so just get in the system and then you can be part of the potential deals.

I’ve had my CSR and SW cards compromised with fraudulent charges. The CSR, Chase caught and the SW I caught. Both times it was painless. I spoke briefly to the fraud department, they removed the transactions and overnighted me a new card with a new account number. Super easy!

The Chase accounts do allow for "Alerts". It took about 5 min to set up for all of my Chase accounts. I get text any time my card is used over the internet, used at a gas station, any foreign charges and any time a charge over $______.
I haven't had any difficulty, but it is nice to know that Chase is good to work with if needed.
