If you run the prepaid Visa as debit, then it will require you to put in the PIN. If you run it as credit, then no PIN is required. While you can do it either way, why would you want to do debit and put the PIN in - just seems to be more work?

All I do is swipe. There’s no option at Best Buy or Kroger to select debit or credit. It takes about two seconds to put the pin in.

Plus I think at Kroger if you use it as credit and don’t have a chip they have to verify your ID matches the name on your card. My Kroger manager won’t let you use prepaid cards to buy gift cards. So using a pin (at self checkout) gets around this.

I use it at Stop & Shop and the option comes up to choose credit or debit and I choose credit. I haven't used it at Best Buy recently, but I believe if it automatically runs as debit there is usually an option somewhere to change payment method somewhere in the process. But yes, if it automatically defaults to debit, it is probably easier to run it that way.

I have also used it numerous times at Shoprite and it also gives you the option of debit or credit.

To run as credit, you just hit the cancel button when it prompts for the pin. I guess that’s one button instead of four. Of course, then you’ll have to sign.

Honestly, the difference is really only on the store’s side. They pay a fixed amount to processes a debit transaction and a variable percentage to process credit card charges. If you’re paying more than about $15, debit will be less expensive for them to process.

Bought $500 Safeway on amazon, $100 off with the Amex MR offer. Used Safeway gift card to buy disney gift cards. They put up to $500 on one! I TESTED FIRST by buying a non-discounted $25 Safeway on amazon to make sure my store allowed it. Got the card in a few minutes. When I bought $500 worth it took 4 hours to process. VERY. HAPPY. I read it can be a bit ymmv but I had no issues. Good luck!

Shopped at Kroger today. Used one of my $100 visa gc's from a previous 4x fuel points offer to buy a $100 Disney gc. Just after I swiped the visa gc, the register computer totally crashed! It took probably 10-15 minutes for it to reboot completely. I just stood there and waited. Talk about a stressful checkout! 10-15 minutes seems a lot longer than that when you're at a checkout with people waiting in line behind you! Once it finished rebooting all my info printed out correctly...got the right # fuel points, right credit for the $100 visa gc. So it turned out ok. But at the time it felt pretty...:crazy2:

I would have stressed too!! One time at my Kroger I used a smaller Visa gift card towards my groceries plus a gift card, I think $45. I swiped it, it seemed fine, I swiped my card to pay the rest... and it just stuck on processing. I thought I broke it! Turns out that I needed to select my payment type again

Does your Kroger ask for ID when you use the visa gift cards?

They ask for ID when the gift card(s) I'm buying totals $100 or more. I always enter my Visa gc as credit not debit. It's just easier that way for me. I've always plenty of groceries to go along with my gift card purchase so I never feel weird about doing it that way. As soon as I got home today I checked the Disney gc right away and it did activate correctly. So yay for that anyway. :flower1:

Thank you to a PP who mentioned that I can add the Virtual Visa (from SB) to my PayPal account:worship:. I am planning for my 2019 trip now and with a loft goal of $1500 in gift cards in 17 months, this plan will help a LOT...

...redeem 2200 SB every month for a $25 Virtual Visa... (a 12% savings!)
...Either redeem an additional $25 in PayPal or wait another month if I don't have enough available and redeem for another discounted Virtual Visa...
...Use the BB QR Code (fingers crossed that this offer sticks around:eek:) and purchase a $50 Disney gift card using my PayPal debit card as payment...

The Earnings...on the money that was FREE to begin with...
1) $6 from SwagBucks (2 SB/$1 spent, + 500 SB bonus)
2) $3 from BB Rewards (6% on BB purchases as an ElitePlus member)
3) $0.50 from PayPal (1% rebate when I use my PayPal debit card and swipe it as "credit")

That is 19% earnings for future use on funds that were free to begin with:thumbsup2. Right now, that is my best possible deal that I can get...it's better than free!

I don't know if the discount will last. It was only advertised as a July promotion, come August it may be back to 2500 for all like PayPal.

I was surprised to see it discounted. I didn't realize they had advertised it as a promo. Sure would be nice if they continued to have it discounted! It was nice being able to buy direct from Disney at a discounted rate without leaving the house!

Some q's...
1) 6% on BB purchases? Are you a credit card holder?
2) How do you redeem a virtual visa on PayPal? Can't seem to find this, do you get cash to your PayPal account when you do that or do you need to spend the money via a PayPal debit card? (I'm not a cardholder)

It’s 12% on B.B. (600 sb / $50).

They sometimes did special discounts on the V/MC options before, so it comes around occasionally. Last one I recall was 10% off. So it'd be nice if they keep it in the monthly program. Even if it's not long term I wouldn't mind it 12% off every few months.

For those without a Safeway who want to use the Amex offer to get Disney cards, I did this (it's convoluted I know but still fun):

Bought $100 in Whole Foods gift cards and $400 in Amazon gift cards, got $100 off using the Amex offer. Loaded the $400 in Amazon gift cards back into my Amazon account and used it to buy 2 $200 Visa gift cards for $414. Then used those gift cards at Sam's to buy Disney gift cards for a grand total of about $400 in Disney gift cards and $100 in Whole Foods gift cards for $400.

Nothing to do with churning really but thank you and the others for talking about all of this, it finally made me realize it will solve my mom's issue. She wants to redeem her points on receipt hog but doesn't want to do paypal and the only other option is amazon. I explained that she should look to see what gc amazon sells that she can buy with the amazon card. She's happy with the idea. She doesn't shop enough on amazon and doesn't want to deal with cash in paypal since she never really uses it either.
