Thanks! I think I'm going to go for it. The AF isn't waived for the first year but there is a $50 statement credit to be used on Delta.
I agree that's a good offer. I think you also get free checked bags for your entire party if you use the card to purchase the tickets. I kept the Gold for a year and then closed it and got the Plat. I booked my oldest DD and her family for spring break so they will also get free luggage, that really adds up.

ETA - would be nice to check DISchurner for @tink1970 or anyone else who has been of assistance before applying

Flight dilemma. In June, flight home booked on SW miles/CP, leaves 0800, arrives ORD 5 pm with layover/change planes in SJC. Used 33k miles

I have enough AA miles for a nonstop flight on AA. Would leave 1:30 pm, arrive ORD 7:30p. Cost is 75k miles for all three of us. I could also use Amex credit to upgrade seats slightly.

This would require flying in and out different airports which means using Lyft or booking a car service, which is slightly less convenient but probably a wash compared to parking at the airport for 8 days.

I’m leaning towards the nonstop but have been chicken to pull the trigger as it’s a web special and can’t be changed.

WWYD?
So you would be leaving out of MDW and returning to ORD? I’d go with the nonstop. You live between the two airports, correct? Research Uber/Lyft fares or limo service and compare with the parking costs.

Any thoughts on the Delta Gold Skymiles card mailer offer for 70,000 points? I'm considering it. Is it worth taking up a 5/24 spot when you are at 2/24?
I am pretty sure I had this targeted mailer last year. When you go to apply look to see if there is a button for business cards (something like looking for a business card?). I used the mailer code but was able to get a Delta Gold Biz for the same points. That way it didn't take up a */24 spot.

I think you mean SW arrives at MDW, with that understanding I would probably go with SW if I had to work the next day. If not I could see with going with AA even though you are relying on Lyft or Uber rather than coming back to your own car.

I use UR points when it's just me also. But for spring break I would like to cover (or at least reserve the rental for my youngest DD so they don't have to dink around with it. Do you know if the 2nd driver can actually pick up the car? I am flying in at a different time then they are. I will already be in Vero when they fly into MCO.
I think both drivers have to be there at pickup. I've always had to show both DLs at the counter and when you leave.

Yes, leaving MDW on SW, arriving ORD on AA. Econ Parking at MDW would be $135. Uber/Lyft is $30 to 40 each way. Car Service is similar. So Lyft would actually be cheaper than parking. Car Service is an option because I hate relying on Uber/Lyft early am, like 6 am. It stresses me to think they might be late/no show.
We’re actually 10 miles from ORD and 20ish from MDW.

Avis is on my slights against me list. They refused to honor the price I was quoted through Costco. So now I’m working with Costco to file a dispute for $51. So lame.
There is something weird going on with some Avis locations and Costco rentals. i had a reservation for Feb picking up at a Universal area hotel and returning at MCO. My first ressie was to pickup at the Doubletree, but at some point they increased the taxes and fees amount by about $40 after I booked. When I asked customer service, they can't explain it, but it is still happening on the website. If I click on the initial price for Avis at the Doubletree, the price suddenly goes up. I cancelled and am going through Budget at the Holiday Inn for now.

Yes, MDW, fixed it. MDW is a further drive home, and parking costs more than Uber/Lyft. Getting luggage at MDW would be quicker but drive home from ORD is faster usually (not accounting for crazy traffic) so arrival time home might be less than 1 hour difference.

Super frustrating. I booked this reservation ages ago and had other options. I’ll avoid Avis in the future.

Bank Bonus Questions...

P2 and I both did the WF checking offer and had no problems. In both cases we met the requirements with real DD (P2's is easy to change online) but we've successfully used pushes from Barclays and our credit union to avoid monthly fees, so I suspect they'd have worked for the bonus, too.

We're due to close Chase for both of us, and I have in my notes that you can empty the account and SM them. I haven't done it yet, but I assume I made that note based on a comment here or at DoC.

I've got my eye on the Citi $500 one. Thinking of doing it in combo with the $1000 WF biz offer. I looks like I could deposit into WF, then pull it out and do the Citi offer. Once that posts, put the money back in WF and keep it there until it posts, since they don't require the new money to stay.

BoA, pull the money out and then call

Chase, pull the money out and then SM. Unless it’s biz then I think you have to call.

WF- I wish I lived in one of those states! WF is wonderfully churnable every year so get on it

Citi- if you don’t have the patience to deal with the IT crap of ****i Bank pass. I did it fine. Got my bonus at the end of the time they had to post it. Some people have to CFPB for it. My parents had trouble as they closed the Savings account but interest posted a couple days later whichtriggered the account to stay open and then got overdrawn letters in the mail because the monthly fees were being charged on the account they thought they closed. A chat with Citi fixed it and refunded all fees.

ETA: DIS sensors don’t care for my favorite Citi nickname 🤣

Thank you, everyone! We've decided to go to Universal the last weekend of this month :woohoo:

The more people in the room the better it is to stay onsite and get EP "free" with the room since it covers everyone in the room. If the cost is high that weekend to buy EP then I would say you need EP. It is dynamically priced so the higher cost days represent higher crowds.

I liked RPR having stayed there 4 times. Also have stayed at Sapphire Falls (No EP but has boat taxi). I like both but if I need EP would go with RPR. I am very low needs on hotel rooms, though. Just need something clean and quiet.

Look into the the cost of an AP for one person. There are room discounts that come out and I don't think a lowest value AP (though check on any blackout dates) is much more than 3 day tickets. It might come out cheaper with room discount and EP. I did that twice - bought AP for me, regular tickets for DD/DS and got the room discount and EP. TBH, they didn't look or ask for my AP either time I did this.
It will just be the two of us. I checked for AP room discounts (using a link on the Universal dis board) and couldn't find any for the end of January at RPR etc.
We upgraded our 3 day passes a few years ago, the adults were free and the kids were only $10 each, so season passes for only $20 total! Of course their strategy "worked" because we had to go back and use the AP's before they expired, and once we stayed onsite with EP it's hard to go back without it. We let them expire last year.

We have 3 nights planned at HRH this May after 5 nights at Disney. I'd like to upgrade again if it's still super cheap, but we usually vacation in June so not sure if/how we'd be able to use them again. Which reminds me I need to decide on whether to renew our Disney AP's that expire early this June... sometimes it's so expensive to "save" money...
Nice deal!
I Think usually the hotels w/EP are much cheaper than staying offsite. USO hotels are on the UR portal, so no need to cash out. Take a look. I booked HRH club level thru UR portal.
Although I find UCT usually has best prices, I would check Sam’s too.
I saw the hotels on the portal. I need to do some more math to determine if I can use UR for the hotel nights-----I still need to book internal flights and some hotels for our Australia trip through the UR portal.
I quoted everyone but am going to be lazy and write everything together down here 😁

I don't think I've ever been able to work it out where staying offsite but buying EP was cheaper than just getting an EP hotel. We've only done RPR and liked it (though haven't been since they finished the lobby remodel) but we are low expectations for hotels so it's fancy for us.

I'd check Expedia or the UR portal for Uni tickets too. The UR portal should be the same price as expedia, even if they are running a discount. Sometimes Expedia is on cashback portals. I think ours were a few bucks cheaper or the same cash price on Expedia/UR portal than UCT anyways because Expedia had a promo, and then I used URs to buy them. My experience buying with URs I was able to pick them up at the will call kiosks less than 20 mins later.

Last September adult 2 park, 3 day park to park tickets were exactly the same price as a Seasonal 2 park annual passes. We've just gone with Seasonal because the dates have worked for us, and typically at the time we aren't sure when the next trip will be but since it's the same price for AP vs just tickets, I'll grab the APs just in case and any other trips are just gravy. We've also lucked out that they typically do 10% dining discounts for Seasonal APs in September. We've also been able to get the discounted Halloween Horror Night with them too.

This was the second time we've done this, in Sept 2018 we bought 5 day 3 park to park tickets from UCT because we were going to Volcano Bay, upgraded them, and got $6.50 refunded on each. Last time we did our Sept trip and 2 days in January... I'm even more excited about this time because we did our Sept trip, a day in Nov, and they will cover us if we (most likely) go again this Sept.

Another thing to keep in mind is (from what I've read on the boards) that if Universal is running a promo ticket like a buy 2 days, get 3 free, etc, and you buy it from them or UCT or wherever, it is only valued as essentially a 2 day ticket, or what you would have paid Universal for it. UCT typically has a 2 day plus 1 day free ticket that Uni does not sell, and it should be valued as a 3 day ticket. But it is YMMV.

@LuckyMamaInDE I wasn't sure when you said you don't have enough UR to cash out to stay on site, you meant cashing out at 1cpp to cover an on site hotel? Uni hotels are on the UR portal as long as there is availability, if that helps. Oh, and you can book an AP rate before you have an AP in hand... depends on how you feel about that and there is the chance they ask at the hotel.
Thanks so much! I will look for tickets on the UR portal as well.
So the points don't expire? Or do you just keep them current by making a purchase (or paying the AF)?

You can use URs for both tickets and an on-site hotel (through the UR site, not cashing out).

Agree with this. Plus RPR seemed better than the other two that have EP in terms of double/queen beds (which is what we needed; the others seemed to have more king rooms).
We'll definitely want a king room. We stayed at RPR once with the kids in 2011, just for one night. I remember the room being small but it would work fine for just the two of us.

WWYD?

Do you have any worries regarding AA cancellation? If not, then it's probably a toss up, as to whether you'd like to get rid of that plane change, and shorten your travel time somewhat. (I'm going on the assumption that you value the AA miles similarly to your 33K miles.)

I'd be going for the nonstop but I don't like flying so would minimize as allowed.
