The Running Thread - 2020

Flying Pig is on my list too! I want to cross off two states in one weekend with it and the Indy Mini, but unfortunately this year's dates don't work. I've heard great things about Flying Pig and am glad to hear good things about Run the Bluegrass!

If you like the idea of two states, let me offer up the Detroit Marathon (October) - it spans two countries! That was my first marathon back in 2012 and really enjoyed it. I'm thinking that will be my fall marathon this year should training go well this spring/summer.

A passport is required so keep that in mind. In addition to the full, there is a US-Canada half also.

My only knock against this race is a bit tongue-in-cheek...they also have a US only marathon and the course is the last half of the full. The start time is maybe 3 or 4 hours after the start of the full. So, here I am at mile 20 or so with "my people" (pace-wise) and then, all of a sudden, there comes a bunch of fast runners zooming by! They're only 7 miles into their race...dang if that wasn't a little disheartening!

The medals are really great and the ribbon has US and Canada themed designs. Even with all of my Disney medals, the Detroit one is still one of my favorites.

With all the talk of the RnR races, has anyone run the one in San Antonio? My DH has a conference there the week prior to the race, so I was thinking of joining him and running the race while I’m there. I guess a more general question would be: is there a website where people post reviews on races?
I've used Bibrave and Findmymarathon for reviews of races before. Findmymarathon has some really good information regarding past weather, participant count, BQ percentages, course elevation and reviews from past participants.
I also use marathonguide.com (go to calendars) to look up races and reviews.

Fun Friday QOTD: I've recently started drinking coffee in a attempt to stop drinking Red Bull. For some reason I like to go all in on things, and when we went to Punta Cana we had coffee one morning from a french press. I thought it was the most amazing coffee I ever had! So for todays question I would like to ask, whats your favorite method to brew coffee and where you get your coffee from?

ATTFFQOTD: So as I said French Press. I buy whole beans medium roast from Black Rifle Coffee Company and grind them each morning. Just order some more yesterday and it smells so good! Interested in what everyone else has to say about this topic today!

ATTQOTD:
1) I would love to do the World Majors - only have NYC under my belt so far.
2) COFFEE - we just use a regular drip coffee maker, and I usually buy either Peet's or Starbucks. We do buy whole bean coffee and grind it right before we brew it.

I keep thinking I might be able to get over my fear of the bridge and tunnel to do the international half..... the US only half seems flatter and less terrifying but not anything amazing, but I hadn't thought that my slowness might actually be an encouragement to those finishing the full :)

Coffee: My amazing husband grinds beans after I go to bed and sets up our drip pot to start at 6am. The Folgers ad was not far off, if I doze through the alarm the aroma (and the HVAC kicking in) does help we roll out of bed. The best days are those when my Disneyland Mickey/Its a small world mug magically appear on the bathroom sink when I step out of the shower. If I do not have to make it, I am less picky about what the coffee is. My favorite is from a coffee farm I visited in Kona, I usually only get a bag at Christmas or Mother's Day. I will take time to get out the French Press on a weekend morning for that. Locally, we have a small coffee shop I cannot believe has not yet gone out of business (it was a Caribou when I moved to the neighborhood, then a Peete's, and now a local guy runs a shop there). I love their pour overs, but feel rather pretentious about this. Last week I was traveling and stumbled onto King's Coast Coffee and really enjoyed it- They have an Islander's tribute blend called lamplighter which made me laugh but it was not my favorite. I then went to visit in-laws for the weekend, the only coffee in their house was Altomayo instant coffee. The corner DD was a large improvement, but it was surprising how this added to my irritation about the trips.

How cool! How do they verify the passport? Do they check it at bib pickup or something? All I can picture is people running across the border holding their passports open and I know that can't be right. :rotfl: I might have to add that one to the list to cross off Michigan!

I can understand the disheartening part, so that would be a big challenge. They do something similar to that at Kiawah Island where the half and full split but then meet up again around mile 20 and mile 10ish. I was already struggling not to walk at that point and since we were mixed in with some of the half marathoners who were walking that just made it even easier to give up and walk. I think it would be even more difficult if people were flying by me and I was moving like a slug.

I love my husband; he is a wonderful man! But he does not drink coffee and has no appreciation for the enjoyment. So, I’m honestly jealous of this! 😆

ATTQOTD: I don't drink coffee. :duck:

Its okay, we love you anyway.

ATTFFQOTD: I love cold brewing. I use a medium roast (columbia is good, but I also like to experiment). This past summer I used coarser grounds, but I didnt feel that the flavor was that much enhanced, so I may go back to the finer ground, which has a shortersteeping time. We'll see as I get closer to cold brew season.
We have nitro cold brew on tap at work and its taken some getting used to, but I've grown to really like it with some vanilla silk.
Hot coffee I use a regular drip machine. I play around with my grounds a lot. Right now I'm brewing Coffee Bean Cookie Butter (which is better in-store, but since there are no coffee beans near me...). I tend to like darker roasts in general, so after this I'll probably pick up a Starbucks French Roast or something similar.

I don't drink coffee. I don't like the taste, never have. I like the smell but can't stand the taste.

I have a question for everyone. I just looked and I have no kids on Wine and Dine weekend so I thought, maybe it's time to do another Disney race. Then i saw the price. Am I the only one that thinks the prices are getting out of control? I mean, I must be considering I am on a thread full of people who keep doing the races, but it just seems ridiculous now???

Prices are definitely out of control. I'm willing to do it because they're usually milestones for me (my first marathon, my sister's first half) and I don't do them super frequently, but I can't imagine doing all the races. The prices are definitely ridiculous.

My favorite is French Press as well but in the interest of expediency I do a pour over each morning for the trip to work.

I signed up for a coffee delivery subscription with a company called Trade Coffee. I was getting a delivery every 3 weeks but changed it to 4. You answer some questions to let them know your taste and then rate what they send you so they are more accurate.

If you or anyone is interested I think I can invite you and we both get a credit. Just PM me.

On a separate note I came across this today:

I have run San Antonio RnR half 4 times over the last 8 years, on 3 different courses, with the last time in 2018. I love that it starts and finishes around the River Walk now. The first two times I did it, it finished near the Alamodome, which was ok for the post race activities, but nearer the River Walk is so much better. The current course is mostly flat, with a couple hardish hills around mile 10. There is work going on around the Alamo now, so the course does not run by there like it used to.

I have heard bad things from folks who have done the full there, with support lacking in the later miles.

You have to show passport at bib pickup. One year I worked registration, and we had Homeland Security people standing behind us making sure of all this. We also had to ask people whether they had recently had any medical procedure involving radioactive isotopes (e.g. bone scan) because it was possible that could set off the detectors crossing the border!

ATTQOTD: Coffee methods....depends on which cup of the day/what mood I'm in. First cup is French Press. This one I drink more cafe au lait style, i.e. with a fair amount of milk, so I want it to have a lot of body, for lack of a better term. If I drink a second cup, I will have a pour over and drink it black. I will not turn down a drip coffee if someone makes it. This is also more challenging for me because I am a decaf person and decaf beans generally still suck and the types/roasts are very limited.

Cheating at Disney!
This has been discussed on the Marathon 2020 thread a little. My opinion is that he didn’t finish the race (parade bus). Sooo, not quite cheating, but a case of lying that he finished... 🤷‍♀️
