Hello,

We sail on Odyssey the end of March (first timers for RC). The entertainment just posted, and so far it is only one thing--The Book. I don't know anything about this one--did anyone have any experience and was it good? We did get reservations as they were quickly booking up. It was my understanding they usually have one broadway musical type show--does anyone know what that might be?

I would probably email guest services and see if you can get a full listing of entertainment. That way, if they know the feature performer or comedians they will let you know as well.

We enjoyed The Book. The first 10 minutes were kind of odd and I wondered what was going on. Its really a "story" with a SteamPunk style background, but also very cerebral. It's not like Disney stuff. It was a more a story put together to showcase some really wonderful dancers and acrobats.

The seating in that "theatre" is really more like a lounge. Get there very early if you want decent seats. There are a lot of seats that are not good seats at all. In fact, on a day before your show, go just before it starts and take a look at how the seating is to get a better idea of what your plan should be.

the other Theatre is a better theatre, but also has some really bad seats, mostly because of poles or balcony overhangs. We enjoyed the Tenors. They did all modern songs and it was a fun show. I don't remember really going to much else. It's definitely not like Disney where the evening show is a must see.

Edit: Sorry, should have added, in case it matters, our cruise was an 8 day over Christmas. They might have different acts for different sailings or lengths.

We really enjoyed the book but others I know hated it. Its a very different/weird show (in a good way). We arrived about 30 minutes early and asked the person checking us in what was the best seat to sit in and they brought us to a sofa/lounge little area for the four us that felt like we had our own little private area in a way. Definitely ask the staff there to help you find a good seat and they will put you in the best available spot.

Just trying to find the email address for guest services--any idea where I would locate that? I've been searching the website, but not seeing it. Thank you!

We were on Odyssey in December. The Book is the only show you need a reservation for, and thus, it's the only one you will see in the planner pre-cruise. There is a show every night though. The Effectors is their "Broadway" type show. There is Show Girls. The rest will be headliners.

How was the Effectors? I was all set to go and my family ditched me saying they thought it was going to be some kind of kids' thing. I'm kind of sorry I listened to them.

Went with a 14 year old, 18 year old , DH and myself and we all enjoyed it. The story is light (superheros fighting the bad guy) but it was done quite well and had some cool special effects. We are going on Wonder soon and seeing Effectors 2. (I guess the story continues). Looking forward to it....but i will say that I wish Royal still continued with true Broadway shows vs in house productions on their newer ships.

We were disappointed with the Effectors and The Book. For The Book, we felt the best seats were at the standing/sitting bar at the top of the house to see everything. We observed one family getting upset as the book opened over their heads and they couldn’t see what was happening on top of it.

Yeah, you don't want to be down at the main level for The Book and you don't want to be too far back, either. The theatres are not great, in my opinion.

I am very disappointed to hear this. We booked this cruise about 2 years ago--and during that time Royal advertised actual Broadway shows like Mama Mia, Grease, Hairspray and having 2 theatre teens this was a big sticking point for why we chose it, we thought they had "outgrown" Disney and this was more teen oriented. Sounds like they have dropped the ball.

Yeah, it's a shame they don't all have Broadway...at least for Quantum and Oasis class.
Having said that, Odyssey is a wonderful ship, shows are enjoyable (The Book is a bit odd, but artistic and great talent) and still well done, and Odyssey itself has the Wow factor. I'm sure you'll have an amazing time, and still enjoy the shows. They are not kid-ish.

It might be a Quantum class thing. Icon has Wizard of Oz.

While it didn't affect my cruise, that had been my thinking when I booked Royal, too. I expected more for teens and adults. My kids did the iFly and it wasn't even as good as when they've on to our local iFly. My son did the 'rock climbing', but it was very tame, again, compared to the indoor place he goes near our house. We couldn't get surfing times and after they saw it, they didn't care.

The things they enjoyed were the balconies and the hot tubs in the adult area. My older son also enjoyed the Refreshment package I bought him, as he could get as many specialty coffees and virgin Margaritas as he wanted.

I was disappointed because I thought we'd get more shopping. Oh there was shopping... high end jewellery, make up, etc. One store that sold souvenirs and t-shirts. One. At least the DCL Fantasy had 3. The "highlight" of our days was finding out which location had the jewellery event so we could get a charm or art show so we could put our name in for a prize. Or, we could have sat in the casino or on deck if we were lucky enough to find a chair.

I enjoyed the cruise, but there could have been more for us. We all missed the premium movies that DCL plays throughout the day in a real movie theatre, as well as the evening shows, again, in a real, properly designed theatre.

Just got back (I wrote a review in another post) and I completely agree with all you said. It was underwhelming for sure. I don't think we'd choose RC again. I didn't get all the high end shopping either. It was like they were trying to be over the top luxury--but somehow it just came across as pretentious. I didn't notice anyone actually buying things in them. A lot of other cruisers said the same. My teens were pretty bored, but made the best of it. We did a lot of reading and just enjoyed the relaxation and wonderful scenery. We did really like the shows--but you were so correct, the seats weren't great just due to design--and we did arrive early. I also missed the little impromptu entertainment offered around ships on Disney (stand up comedians, bands, etc.)....the entertainment offerings on this were more trivia and "guess that tune" 80's, 90's...70's...etc. versus a band or live performers.

My DH said he never thought he'd utter the words "I preferred Disney", but he did after that Royal cruise. It was nice. DCL was better.

Was on Odyssey in November. I liked their shows. The Book and Showgirls were very good. There was another show but do not recall what it was. I enjoyed them. The ship was not my favorite but I tried it. One and done for me on the Odyssey.
