I splashed out on a big set of chalks yesterday <img width="75" src=http://www.scraptastic.co.uk/products/misc/chalk-24.jpg>

I love some of the things I've seen other people do with chalk, but now I've got them I'm a little intimidated - any suggestions for what I can do with them?

Bev,

I haven't gotten into chalk as yet but I saw a really neat treatment I thought I might try someday.

I don't know if I can explain it well but I'll give it a try. They took a punch and punched several in a dark color. They used the same dark color for the background and laid the punches on the paper. Using a lighter chalk, they over-chalked the punches so that you could see the outline on the background paper. After they mounted their pictures they placed the chalked punches around as accents to give sort of a positive and negative effect.

I hope you can see this in your head as I have explained it. It really was neat looking.

At a workshop I attended we were shown how to chalk die cuts to add more dimension to them. It works especially well on die cuts that have embossed areas. I didn't pay much attention because I wasn't much interested in chalking so I can't give detailed instructions...I think I'll be seeing the other consultant who taught this tonight so I'll ask her!

Bev-

I recently splurged on some chalks too! I mostly use them on die cuts, to give them some dimension. I also use them on paper dolls, or what ever for cheeks, etc... I found some make- up applicators (very similar to a cotton swab) at the drug store. They are great, b/c one end of the swab is pointed and the other is flat. I like to use them to apply the chalks. Here's a link to a "hiking-themed" paper piecing I did. Hopefully you will be able to view it, and see how I used the chalk to embellish a plain hiking boot die cut, and compass die cut, as well as "the ground" and "rocks". This was my first major attempt at using chalks and I was pretty pleased.

Please post some of your chalking layouts when you get them done!

Good luck,

I just splurged on a box of chalks and I am having a blast playing with them. I use them mostly for coloring diecuts and paper dolls. I used them to shade a palm tree and coconuts for a Poly layout and was amazed how it made the layout pop. I also used them to shade the edges of a white cardstock "wave" that I had journaled on for my Living Seas pageand I really liked the effect. Have fun!!
