I agree that Luke shouldn't turn evil, but so far the new trilogy has seem very uninspired story wise. I really hope there are some surprises in store for us.
I would appreciate the whole gray aspect of the force. The Jedi always struck me as incredibly arrogant and dumb in the prequels. I'm not sure if they were supposed to come off that way or not. The later seasons of the Clone Wars cartoon kind of delved into that. How the council was making all the Jedi into warriors when they all didn't even want to fight and they'd gone really far from their original peace keeper roles. I always liked how in the original expanded universe books Jedi could have different roles than fighters. There was a Jedi who was a master healer, some were diplomats, they weren't all lightsaber masters.
I'm actually kind of sad they had Yoda fight with a lightsaber in the Attack of the Clones. He always seemed much more of a meditative, non-action Jedi. I feel like I would have been more impressed by his battle with Dooku if he hadn't had a lightsaber at all and had just peacefully sat there and blocked Dooku's attacks with the force.
My boyfriend ascribes to the theory that Rey is a reincarnated sort of Anakin. That the chosen one comes about every time there is an extreme imbalance in the force. Anakin was created because Plaguis (I know that is spelled wrong and don't care) was messing around with life and death. Now Rey was created maybe because of something Snoke is doing.
I don't know if I agree with the theory, honestly I think it is too in depth for a SW movie.
But I think the theory is more of...not really a reincarnation but just the next in the line that gets to share the extreme force powers and such. Not sure if that makes sense.
Completely agree about the villains...I hope we find out what Rey's midichlorian count is and that that particular piece of Jedi technology wasn't lost at the end of the Clone Wars. Inquiring minds want to know. If she is Anakin reincarnate, was it some kind of purgatory thing having him come back on Jakku? We know how he feels about sand.
Following the OT, SW has had a villain problem. Vader is one of the most iconic bad guys of all time - and a really good bad guy makes for compelling cinema (you can call it the "Joker imperative" or the "Hannibal Lecter corollary" or whatever to make it sound serious - but the truth is no one is watching "Silence of the Lambs" just for Clarice Starling). Of all the things NOT to follow or repeat, the remaining movies haven't gone that route. I'd hoped Kylo Ren had promise on that front - but then he was less "Vader in the OT" and more "Anakin in the PT". All his purported conflict came across like an emo kid at the Seven Hill mall torn between whether to get the Avenged Sevenfold or Distrubed tee at Hot Topic - I half expected him to just say forget it and sulk off to Toschii Station to pick up some power converters.

Is anyway else thinking that this new trilogy might really mirror the original?
Empire is far and away the best (though I do like ANH best). Lots of people thought Jedi was a cheap cop out of an ending to the trilogy.
So here we have Force Awakens directed by Abrams, that lots of people say is a straight up rip off of ANH. Next up we have Last Jedi, which I am really really hoping will be the Empire of this trilogy and it has the opportunity to be that really good, different feel game changer movie.
Then we'll have Episode 9 directed by Abrams again, so that could be the let down that Jedi was to a lot of people.
Um, don't all trilogies follow the same outline? Act One: Heroes win small battle setting story into action. Act Two: Evil regains footing. Act Three: Evil is destroyed.

I could care less about midichlorians. I thought it was a stupid storyline that didn't need to be told. I don't want her to be Annakin reincarnated. Let her just be some Jedi's knock off kid. She doesn't need the Christ backstory they tried to give Annakin for some reason. All the other Jedi and Sith had parents. Here's some weird kid that doesn't and he's supposed to be the ultimate big bad superpower? He was still being the lap dog to his Sith master after 20 years, something no self-respecting Sith apprentice would have put up with for long, let alone the Force's Chosen One.
Vader was almost ruined by the storyline of the prequels.
But I love your second paragraph. They need a real villain. Whiny, emo Kylo Ren isn't going to cut it. I don't want to sympathize with baby Solo's problems. Sheesh, we never heard Luke complain about being shipped off to the butt end of nowhere while his sister got raised as a Princess on a Core World. And yet now we have Kylo Ren and his daddy issues? I thought Kylo Ren was the worst character in TFA.
He had all the charisma of a brick and was whinier than my 5 year old twins... it's like they took every poor characteristic that old people complain about the younger generation and tried to stuff it into a bad guy. He's a bad guy. Make him evil, don't try and make him some pitiable teenager who didn't get enough time with a therapist.

I don't mind JJ. I am young and didn't grow up with the Star Wars age so I only really know modern Star Wars. I did like Rogue One better than TFA however IMO TFA was still really good.
Oh there's no doubt he whined about living there in general. But when Kenobi told him Leia was his sister you didn't exactly get a "***" moment there from Luke where he raged about the situation. I mean, the unfairness of that decision was a good reason to go to the Dark Side. Better than Annakin's or Kylo Ren's anyway...
Fair enough, you'd think there would have been at least one moment of "wait, you got to be a princess and live in a palace while i was stuck on Tatooine?" (even if Tatooine is considered a strong Force sensitive planet, but still)
and I hated how Anikan's played out - like it dragged on for 3 movies and then in like 5 minutes he went from questioning what side he was on to slaughtering younglings
Oh trust me - my first paragraph was made with tongue firmly planted in cheek. The midichlorians were a lazy plot device that ended up raising a lot more questions than they answered - and they weren't even necessary. It was a bad idea in Episode I and should be left there. Which means they probably will make a reappearance in this trilogy. Because that's apparently how JJ and Kathy operate.I could care less about midichlorians. I have cognitive dissonance between Anakin and Vader. So how exactly does a headstrong, reckless, impulsive, overly emotional, brooding, and insecure Anakin who rushes into things while disregarding all authority magically turn into a cool, calm, collected, patient, confident, and emotionless Sith Lord that carefully plans his traps while obeying every minor whim of the Emperor? They're two completely different characters.
Fixed it for you. It's the only way the story works.
