The Running Thread -- 2022

December running:
82 miles
10:25 min/mi

2022 summary:
812 miles - my highest ever!
10:46 min/mi
3.4 average days per week run
4.4 mi average run length

December was my second highest mileage month behind January in 2022. I was on vacation for 1.5 weeks and we didn't travel so I had more time than normal to get in some longer runs, which felt good.

Overall, 2022 was a good year in terms of running. I increased my total mileage and my average days per week run. I hope to do it again in 2023 while staying injury free!

December 2022
Running distance: 216.58 miles
Running time: 35:25:35
Average pace: 9:49 per mile

2022 total
Running distance: 1,231.57 miles
Running time: 199:42:34
Average pace: 9:44per mile

Second most miles in a year. Only missed 2016 by 22 miles. Ugh! Gotta set a record next year!

December running - 79 miles with 2 races; and the coldest run in my life at a windchill of 17
Riding (all indoors) - 215

The goal this year was to reduce mileage to introduce more intentional rest - as I hit 55 my body could use more. Well I am not good. Totals for the year goal was 885 running and I ran 991, the goal for riding was 2950 and I hit 3400. Still need to focus on more intentional rest.

I will say running and especially cycling helped me process the sudden death of my Mom in August, and sort through all of the stress of taking over my Dad's care as he has mild dementia. I cannot over state how many times that exercise was that escape. My gym family was incredible, and many evenings I would go to class and let that hour be an hour where I could just let my mind turn off.

December miles: 90 (21 h 53 m)

Yearly miles: 401.8

A PR for both the month and year! Last year I only ran 213.2 miles. And this is with not running at all in Feb or March this year, and hardly at all in April and May.

Go me!

ETA: I also biked 904.4 miles this year. Not a PR but probably the most in a year since at least 2014, if not 2012.

December total: 170.6 miles
2022 Total: 1442.2 miles (my highest ever)

I tried to find my 2021 miles total. I think I was around 1000-1100 maybe? So, this year was a big step up. My body handled it way better than I would have thought. I am going back to 5 days a week after Dopey but planning on incorporating some lessons learned this year. I usually dial it way beck in the summer then have to rebuild in the fall. This year showed me that I can maintain a decent base through the summer months, so I’m going to try to stay above 100 miles a month to make that fall HM training more productive.

December Training Summary
Running Miles: 146.9 mi
Running Time: 23:20:43
Average Pace: 9:36/mi
Average HR: 133/min

Full Year Summary
Running Miles: 913.6 mi
Running Time: 146:24:21
Average Pace: 9:37/mi
Average HR: 134/min

Odd that I had a very V-shape running year with the most miles in the winter months and the least in the summer (opposite of usual), but when I think about life events, it sort of makes sense. With a few others here, we did Dopey in January and finished the CRAW race in March, so that explains the early year mileage, but then I was searching for a job for a few months which really ate into my training. Once I accepted a new job offer, the mileage started ramping up again…

December total: 45.4 miles
2022 total (but I only started tracking in September): 132.2 miles
2023 goal: 1000 miles

Taper is driving me nuts! I had really increased my activity level in December, with Kung Fu 4 nights a week as we start prep for Chinese New Year. Going from that to just maintenance runs a few days a week has been harder than I expected. But I am looking forward to my first half and optimistic that I might actually finish it!

December 2022
Achilles tendinitis really put a damper on the running at the beginning of the month, and then the holidays and a brief, secondhand-vape-induced illness knocked me out at the end of the month. But I was still able to do the stationary bike, so I ended up with my highest mileage month ever: 149.86. I could have done the extra .14 on the treadmill last night after I did the math, but I‘d rather save the 150 mile milestone for 2023 (and with more running!)

2022 was a heck of a year - glad it's over. Here's to 2023.

December Mileage: 90.7 mi
December Time: 15h 11min

2022 Total Mileage: 1,442.1 mi
2022 Total Time: 243h 26m

In terms of running, 2022 easily blew my previous high (2021 - 992 miles) out of the water. But even more importantly than that, after dealing with various injuries, I managed to get healthy early in the year and stayed that way all year long. That's the part I'm proudest of, because it feels like I finally found the right foundation for my fitness.

Also, I ran my first marathon. Probably my last too. Maybe. We'll see.

Happy New Year everyone!

December marked a return to near-normal running volume, even if I remain pace-constrained by my dodgy lower leg. I'm about at my wit's end with the leg's "good today, iffy tomorrow" approach to life. Everything points to it being a soft tissue issue, but we can't seem to find a durable solution to it. Gotta get through Dopey and then re-assess. All of that leads into last month's and last year's numbers:

December Training Summary
Running Miles: 152.88 mi
Running Time: 29:11:35
Average Pace: 11:32/mi
Average HR: 138/min
Walking: 0.0 mi

Full Year Summary
Running Miles: 1,801.44 mi
Running Time: 329:51:04
Average Pace: 10:51/mi
Average HR: 144/min
Walking: 532.4 mi

2022 was not a great year for me, but I did eek out 769 miles for the year, including 4 10-mile races.

I started strong, but got hit with an injury. As I was getting back on track, a close friend was hit and killed by a car while running. Then Covid caught me.

Needless to say, bring on 2023! So far I’ve the PHM weekend on tap - including my first multiple race runDisney weekend! And then I’ve got a bucket list half in June.
