Hurricane Irma?

They just announced Orlando is under a tornado watch. They just projected the storm will start arriving around 7.

Seeing a lot of photos from today at the Polynesian of Lilo&Stitch meet and greets and an impromptu pet "fashion show" put together for families with pets put together by CMs. The CM spirit is just amazing to me. They are doing this to help keep guests entertained when they have to be wondering if they will even have homes left when they go home. Top notch people!

We're staying at the comfort inn at lake buena vista who have decided that today and tomorrow they are not going to serve food. Everywhere else is going to be closed so not sure what we are going to do for food.

First time in a hurricane situation so at a loss what to do

Some Wawas are still open.

Category 3 now. Fingers crossed destruction isn't as bad as feared.
Hey Disney people - looks like Monday morning it gets better for you! :)

Again, i dont want this to escalate into anything overly negative, now is not the time for that. But i am a big believer in personal accountabilty, especially in a time of a natural disaster when resources will be spread so thin. You can't expect or anticipate anyone else taking care of you.
I agree. But I don't think it's at all helpful to keep repeating it at this point.

We're at BWI right now. I agree Disney is doing everything they can to make this experience as pleasant as possible. They've even let people bring their pets. There are dogs everywhere & even a couple of large lizards.
I'm really curious about this. At the height of the storm when the wind is blowing, how are people getting their pets out to do their business?

Inquiring minds want to know.....

Watch is ok, but there's been Tornado cells in the area since this morning.
And that will continue. Those bands are rotating and the individual cells are rotating. I know there was a spotted tornado in the Ft. Lauderdale area, near the airport.

"Fast-moving tornado just reported at Fort Lauderdale International Airport moving NW crossing I-595!" That was about 15 minutes ago.

So it is a real concern.

Finally, a serious and important question. During the 4 hurricanes in 2004, our little guy had no problem. You take them out between the bands when it's stopped raining and the winds have slowed down somewhat. He's 14 years old now but still active and has a brother, so we'll be doing the same with both of them. And now you know the rest of the story.

The hurricane was only reported on British news from about Thursday onwards after hitting the Carribbean. I'm the only person actively following it from my friends and family because of my affinity for Disney, but most people over here would have no idea about it. As I said previously, it's very possible that many overseas guests were completely unaware of its arrival until late this week. Many people don't watch the news when away. I certainly didn't on my first two trips, as I had no idea Charley had been heading straight for us.

Therefore many overseas guests wouldn't have the slightest clue what was going on or how to prepare. Also we have storms in Britain about half the year with winds of up to 60mph so even hearing some of the weather warnings probably wouldn't resonate too much with people. I think some people have been a little harsh to those who may be under-prepared.

I don't know about people staying in hotels. I am a local. I have a golden retriever. This was a big concern. On Saturday, I purchased four pieces of sod. I put them on plastic in my garage. Then, I followed my dog when she did her business in the yard. I scooped up a little of the freshed treated dirt and sprinkled over the sod. I don't know if it will work. It hasn't gotten bad enough yet that she can't still go out in the yard. I will not be taking her out in hurricane winds, so I've got my fingers crossed that she accepts the sod!

I also apologize for all of the people who have been a bit harsh. I hope all goes well for you.

The OP is apparently from the UK or somewhere overseas, and a natural disaster which is never seen there, is happening here. For those judging rather than offering helpful suggestions, imagine yourself overseas and facing an emergency. No doubt your level of preparedness would be different than if the emergency was in your own country.

My friend threw his back out while in Italy, once. Even getting him medicine and unguents was 10x more stressful than if we had been in the US. Now multiply that with the current situation, and spare a little empathy for Mr. Matthews and his family, if you can.

I appreciate the kind words.

Yeah we are from the UK and if I'm honest, leading up to Irma, Uber drivers and others where saying not to worry and that the media was seriously overstating the seriousness of it all. I think we were just a bit ingorant to it all.

We've popped out and got more drink and cookies so I know we'll be fine. I really appreciate the kind words from people and wasn't intending to agrivate people. I can imagine a lot of international tourists will probably be in the same boat.

I truly hope everyone keeps safe

Well, that's a relief. ;)

Thanks for this critical hurricane update!

You sound like me. a friends husband broke both of his arms in a dirt bike accident once and both were casted to the shoulder, so I had to ask...how does he go to the bathroom. Turns out I didnt want to know after all :scared:

I am going to guess that those who brought pets are using potty pads or they are having them go right outside the room and flushing the waste in the toilet. I dont do poop, its something that I just know about myself, so I dont have pets pug:.
