Hurricane Irma?

I will be honest and say I don't have a clue what 'most' CMs are paid, I've just heard that many are paid minimum wage and depend on extra shifts to pay the bills.

I feel many people (Disney CMs and others) live a lifestyle based on their income and losing a days (or 2 days) pay for many has the possibility to affect their ability to pay bills, etc. I think many wish it wasn't that way but sadly it's reality for many. Just my thoughts. Not trying to start a debate. I was just sharing (as others had) what happens where I work when my work location is unexpectedly closed.

I applied at Disney for office work when I moved near Orlando, and the pay rates were at least half what I was used to, and less than half what I received when I got a job with another company. They were offering even less for most park jobs and non tipped hotel jobs. I don't know what they pay now, but I would guess the variance is still similar. My sister works for a hotel that had a lot of damage during a prior hurricane and they had some sort of insurance that allowed them to keep people on the payroll when the hotel was closed for repair, at least for a while. I don't know what something like that costs, but her hotel wasn't huge so it was probably a lot cheaper than it would be for a huge employer like Disney.

Disney should be fine but I'm sure they'll let you know if their under a boil water notice. Further south where the hurricane hit we're all under a boil water notice. It's pretty much standard after a hurricane

Are you still on generator power? Trying to figure all this out. We were doing one hour on and two hours off, just running the fridge and freezer. It has been cool enough to let the breeze through the house. All the survivalist sites suggest to load the freezer with water well before the storm/apocalypse, this is where we weren't "topped off." We had some extra frozen water but apparently we should have loaded the the freezer with water. We were very lucky and only had to run the generator for a one day cycle.

FYI to all:
If the traffic light is out, that means the intersection should be treated as a 4-way stop...watching people blow through dead traffic lights shouldn't be a form of entertainment. It was quite telling that there was no form of police traffic control when the power is down. This would be part of my PSA if I were running things. I'm too busy trying to figure out which pet to eat first, to issue first aid. That was a joke, we took a pet to get neutered today. Things are very normal other than moving a few tons of tree debris today and that our "sincere" internet provider seems to be in way over their head.

Still on road with the whole state of Florida. Almost to turnpike. What normally takes 9 hours will end up being 17-18, but at least it's better than being at work.

Gas has been easy to find. Sign up along interstate saying the turnpike also has gas.

Saw some downed trees past Lake City (in Gainesville, maybe?) but outside that and a few of the older billboards, haven't seen much damage. We've not ventured too far off I-75 though so that's probably why.

No one should be second guessing their decision to cancel. I wish I could have left, but it would have cost me my job, and family who sheltered with me would have been left to their own devices. But for about four hours it was utterly terrifying. Partly because it came at night, so you could hear things and have no idea what it was. But even in a solid structure the unrelenting wind was awful. I sat in a chair in the back corner of our basement getting through one minute at a time. It was so much worse than the other storms we have had, I think in part because it lasted so long. Charley was just as intense, but it moved by so quickly that by the time you were reaching your limit, it was over. The same with Frances and Jeanne. This one just kept going, like the Energizer bunny. If I knew I wouldn't have to worry about job or family, I would leave next time a storm like this is coming.

On the plus side, I got a new room at Pop today and I am ready for a little R & R :flower::daisy::flower1::thumbsup2
I agree, at first I thought maybe people were over-reacting. But I realized that this could have gone much differently. People made the correct choice but I do wonder about the people that cancelled for this coming weekend without seeing how things turned out. I guess it was just to much to deal with for some people, maybe with experience.

The area my family is in got gusts up to 76mph and trees are down all over town and it looks like a war zone with peoples houses having trees on them and cars destroyed.

75 is deff a big deal

I know!! I've seen the devastation it's caused. That's what I'm saying it's so strange how it's different. I think it's like the other poster said, its to do with gusts etc and sustained winds. Plus the direction the wind is blowing and what kind of system it is from. We don't get hurricanes here, the last one was thirty years ago but we do consitantly get very high winds.

First, glad you are safe, but sorry that you had to go through something so scary.

This is out of curiosity - I am guessing from your user name you live FL. As a girl from the Midwest - I always thought no one in FL had a basement and now I want to know how do you get a basement in FL?

Yea still on generator, no power back. Lost it around 1pm Sunday and been out since. Hoping for it soon but electric company said in my area they should have everyone back with electric by the 22nd. Other areas south of me they just said should be a few weeks.

Ready for more gas deliveries down here. Only about 3 stations near me with gas and lines are brutal.

Today had to refuel cans for the generator and put a little in my car. Waited in line for 3 hours. Wife watched Mulan on her phone before we got to the pump. Then I realized why it took so long, gas was just trickling out. Took me literally about 15-20 min to get 15 gallons of gas. Just brutal

Might be coming north to Orlando this weekend so I hope the gas situation is better up there by then

Thank you!!! I appreciate sharing your story. I felt we would be safe at Pop but like you, it was the sound of the storm that I was afraid of terrifying my child who currently does not mind storms.

I hope you have an amazing, restful vacation! You deserve it!!!

@scrappinginontario I understand where you are coming from. My DS24 and his GF were to leave for WDW 9/9 and canceled. They planned for so long, had everything all set and decided the stress was not worth it. It was an agonizing decison for them. At first, the consensus was to wait it out until the end of the week and decide. At the beginning of the week, we were hopeful for them. At first, we thought about all the big snow storms that are predicted and we get zip. DS and his GF kept going back and forth and the stress, as the days passed was getting to them. Finally, they made the decison to cancel, after asking each other if they would be okay with canceling, finding out all would have been fine. Once they heard WDW was closing for 2 day, it reaffirmed their decision. DS' GF could not switch her week, so it was go or cancel, unless rescheduling for next year. They were able to get all of their money back and decided to head North. They are currently in Canada, after spending 2 days in Niagara Falls. They said, Disney will always be there. DH & I were disappointed for them, too. However, they are on vacation having a great time.
