Anyone have a preference for using Wifi or mobile carrier (data plan) for the Boarding Group selection in the morning? Assuming a lot of digital traffic when park opens and everyone is trying to get their place in line!

I'll wait for the backup bg to be all done and give you the stats. This is the last time I'll be checking morning operations so after today you're going to have to read back on reports or wake up in time to see the numbers unfold
Thanks so much for the extensive effort you’ve put into this over these first few weeks. Really looking forward to our trip at the end of January; this thread and your observations and data have been exceedingly helpful. I feel confident(ish) that we’ll get to ride this (barring tech issues, major mishaps, and/or acts of God).

Merged you to the proper thread
There's been equal reports of people being successful using either one

I'll keep checking the thread but I'm confident the system won't change that much for now.

We are visiting HS on 2/2. The park is scheduled to open at 9. We have a reservation at Hollywood and Vine @ 8. So I can open my MDE and sign up for a BG as soon as the clock strikes 9? Thanks!
Watch for park opening time to change. It likely will.

So, I currently have my Mom and Dad on my MDE account from our 2018 trip, planning things for them. They are NOT accompanying us in late Feb. Are there reports of people having issues with the app not allowing BG access with the "not everyone has tapped in yet" even if I'm not selecting them for the BG? Should I work on getting them removed from my MDE account or is this not really a problem?

Thanks!

I would personally use park wifi, since I have found some service providers can be a bit spotty with service at the parks. I would want a more consistent signal.

We had no issues at all with just selecting 2 out of the 12 on our MDE.

Not a problem. Just pick the people that are in the park

I personally find it's so much faster to be able to hit "select all" that I have everyone removed from my MDE account who isn't going on any currently-planned trips, so I'd suggest that unless you have another upcoming trip with them already on MDE.

I tried to remove people but it says they have plans attached to them even though they don't. I did practice just selecting the people I need and was pretty quick (helps they are all next to each other in list)

I made it on Hagrid's as well as RotR today! Such a great adventure! Just for fun, here was my timeline this morning:

4:15 - left apt (St. Pete)
5:50 - parked
6:17 - line starts moving to enter park
6:30 - scanned in @ DHS
7 - Got boarding group 9
7:15 - BG called right as I reached RotR entrance. Walked straight on, rode w/ just 2 other people! No delays, all elements of the ride working properly.
7:38 - exited DHS
8:07 - parked @ Uni
8:19 - in line @ IoA entrance
8:40 - scanners open / line moving
8:43 - scanned in @ IoA
8:54 - lockers
9:25 - rode Hagrid's

I'll be back for another ride on RotR with some friends on MLK Jr. Day, so I'll try to track our timing that day, too.

(PS - if you have any questions about Hagrid's, please go to the thread for it over in the Universal section so we don't pull this thread off topic.)

Do you think there is really anything to the “strategy” or do you think you just got lucky with a low BG. I want to try the same thing you did but my plan would involve coming back to DHS after Hagrids. I’ve ridden them both 7-10 times now (more rides on Rise surprisingly) and I think I have a favorite but I’d like to ride them the same day.

I had planned my day with the assumption that I would get the BG (I was hoping for something in the 60-80 range, honestly), go to Hagrid's, then come back for Rise later in the day. I was surprised to be so low and actually a bit worried. Since I had a low #, I needed to wait at DHS instead of leaving for Universal right away. I do think if I had waited 30 seconds or so, I'd have gotten a higher number, since presumably the groups are still being given in order of whatever phone goes through fastest. It's still really all luck, though - I could have paused briefly and still ended up with 20 or 30, which still would have been to low to be sure I'd get back in time, so I would have had to choose between the two. Same if they hadn't opened immediately this morning - I would have had to decide which one I wanted to ride more. I knew that was the gamble going in, I just got lucky today.

Think it’s just luck. Friends were at DHS at 5:15 this morning in line for park open, but when BGs dropped they got group 71 and the people standing next to them got 21. Both people were making the attempt at the same time, so there’s no predicting really.

Many people have been curious about this. As far as park open MDE & BG access goes...

Wi-fi has been reliable. We were all worried about the bombardment of traffic at precisely 7am but to everyone's delight, WDW's wi-fi has been handling the job.

Personal data likely varies between carrier, day, and who knows... even wind direction. Bottom line, some carriers on some days might be quicker than the wi-fi, while other carriers or other days not.

It's near impossible to confirm which is best with all the variables: provider, phone model, user expertise ;) and countless other things. Both methods do work. If you think your data works superior to wi-fi in the park, go with it. If your data tends to be wonky at HS/WDW (or you don't have data plan), use the wi-fi. If your party can try both, go ahead. Good luck :) You should be fine either way.

Huge thanks to this thread. Looks like this was a good day to go. Tapped in around 6:40am. Opened the app 5 seconds before 7am and boarding group was still disabled. Tapped into my status and it became active (this was a great tip). Got group 12.

Rope dropped TSM without rushing over there and it was basically a walk on, then headed over to RotR.

It really was awesome. So glad I avoided spoilers. My wife, who was complaining all morning about waking up early and is not a star wars fan, walked off the ride with her jaw on the floor and said it was amazing lol. Today was a great day.

What is your opinion of my chances next Friday? It is my HS day & also the Friday before MLK weekend. It’s the only day we can go. I appreciate all the great suggestions and will be there at 6 with family ready to pounce at 7. What do you think? Thanks!

You're chances are great as long as you're in the park by 7am
